D'Addario EFT74 strings discontinued - does anyone know why?

+1 for the wound-A FT74 strings. and I still remember that D'Addario used to sell individual wound-A strings from/for this set for people who keep breaking them.

Yes they "used to" sell the individual wound A strings, but not any more. I have not been able to get the individual wound A strings for a few years now.
