I think it is a mandola but I would email that store to find out. Kentucky had an arrangement to produce a line of Monteleone designed instruments i assume with some arrangement with Grisman as well. I have a friend who has a grand artist style mandola. I think they came out in the 1980s and were pretty decent instruments, a cut above the usual Kentucky line.

Carmel Music has the KH1300 (Grand Artist) from 1984 for $3150.

Also more info here in a review in Frets of the mandolin KM Dawg.

The KH1300 was the copy of the Loar H5 mandola only with a flowerpot instead of Fern. $1300 new in mid 80's.
The KHDawg was an A model Fhole mandola also designed by Monteleone like the KMDawg model. $800 new in mid 80's
Both were very limited production and hard to find one today at any price. Made during Kentucky's peak period.
There was also a KH-600 Mandola which was more like a '23 A5 design at $700 in mid 80's. I use to own a KH1300 before I got my '24 H5 and it was a really nice top end mandola.

PS: At $1200 I hope you have already bought it! That's a deal for that one. The KMDawg mandolins are in the $3000 range and they were only $1550 in the mid 80's. The KHDawg should be at least in the $1600 range or more due to it's rarity.

You are correct. I didn't look closely enough at the photos. I thought it was a grand artist style.

A Kentucky with a Monte head? or a Monte mandola A?
The Kentucky KHDawg has the Monte head on it. That's one of the reasons it's worth $100 more than the KH600.

$1200.00 for the A style mandola is a good deal, I have a DAWG model mandolin and I think its been one of the best all around mandolins I have had. Great workmanship playability and tone. I have been on the hunt myself for the elusive Dawg mandola A style with no luck.

someone had posted a while back about there only being 49 dawg mandolins built (this figure i believe came from desert rose) - i wonder how many dawg mandolas are around? i would be surprised if it were more than a dozen.
in the old frets magazine article - a photo actually shows a dawg mandocello - i wonder if that was a one-off for grisman for promoting the line?

I just sold a Kentucky Dawg F style mandocello earlier this year. Nice instrument. I understand only two were built, both for Grisman.

Charles - Do you have pictures of the instrument?

Being an owner of a Kentucky Dawg mandolin, I would just love to see the other instruments people are talking about. If anyone has pictures, please post them. Maybe we can start a "Kentucky Dawg" journal; wouldn't be that extensive, but would be cool nontheless...

Lefty&French - Is there someway you could post that picture with better clarity? I assume it's blurry like that due to the size of the image. It would make a killer wallpaper for my desktop. Any help would be appreciated...

    Thanks!

the last kh-dawg i remember seeing for sale was on the co-mando list about 5 years ago - i think the seller was asking $2500

...so, do any cafe members own one of these - we really should start a sumi-era kentucky photo archive. i had a km-dawg, but unfortunately didnt take any digial pics of it, as this was back when film cameras were still king.
