Do we know what the "tune of the month" for January 2006 is going to be? I want to get a head start.

Appearantly there hasn't been any poll yet.
I need some suggestions! So far I have two and I could use about four more.
How about el Cumbanchero? #
And it must be sung. #
Badly. #
Or not.
After participating, and watching the forum since its inception, it would appear that the lesser known tunes get little or no response, but the well known (must know) jam tunes get a lot of input. Maybe something more mainstream that will get some interest, and help people gain confidence to participate in their local jams. Now what that tune could be...? Gold Rush...? Soldiers Joy...?, Bill Cheatham...? oh wait we did that, Blackberry Blossem..? Turkey in the Straw, etc.... whatever. Just a thought? Dan
Play em like you know em!
I havn't participated in quite a while, but I'd like to again. How about a blues tune?
Milk Cow Blues, How Long Blues, Trouble In Mind, Rock Me Baby (or Rock Me Mama), Walkin' Blues, etc....REAL blues, not just some song with "Blues" in the name of it.
I'd appreciate something that is not too advanced, I've been participating (or trying to) for a year and played for several more but I'm still only at intermediate level. For example, Back up and push was a tune I just jumped because unless you're extremely advanced and can improvise cool things you can't do much with it. Simpler tunes can be played by anyone and those who are good can do more advanced things with it, while beginners and intermediates can play them at their level.
Why not:
Old Joe Clark
Cripple Creek
Down Yonder
8th of January
Billy in the lowground (we've had it, but the same month we also had Whiskey before breakfast and I think everyone played whiskey before breakfast)
Turkey in the straw
John Hardy
Irish washerwoman
St Anne's reel (ok, I can play it but there are probably others who can't, and I could learn the Irish version)
What about Irish tunes?
Connaughtman's rambles
Boys of bluehill
Kid on the mountain
Maid behind the bar
The otter's holt
Thanks to everyone for the suggestions.
The poll is up at the Yahoo! group, please go and vote.
Happy New Year!
Looks like Cripple Creek. Hope to get some more response now when 27 people voted!!
Hmmm...a couple of more votes and Old Joe Clark could be on top.
Oh, the anticipation is killing me!
Shouldn't the poll close now when January is here?
I left the poll open for a week to give people enough time to vote and so that they could be aware that there's a tune for this month. The poll actually closes Thursday at Midnite.
How about 1. The 28th of January or
2. The 8th of January??
Both are good and certainly timely. Doug
It's one thing to vote, it's quite another to have the guts to record yourself and post it on the internet!Originally Posted by (Bluegrasstjej @ Jan. 03 2006, 05:09)
I am a rank beginner and started working on Cripple Creek last night. I think I might be able to play it . . . by January 2007!
I know. There was a long discussion last year about the level of the participants. Personally I like to hear beginners and their simple recordings and I'd love to hear recordings of all levels, but actually mostly by beginners. Before I started showing off my recordings, I thought my playing was really too bad but I saw one gal put her recording on some bluegrass forum, she was really at the beginning phase and it was so inspiring!!!! If she could post hers, then I could too.
So, beginners, come on and put your recordings and don't wait until you're advanced! If you do it others may do it too. Even now, I hesitate to post my recordings because the others are so much better. I would love to see more beginners post their recordings because then I would get courage to post mine too even when I'm not completely satisfied with it. Nobody expects you to play like Ricky Skaggs if you've played for a month.
The poll is closed and it's official. The first tune of the year is Cripple Creek! The final results:

Cripple Creek: is it this one?
(just to make sure i'm doing the right tune)
Thanks!
Cool... Just been working on the solos for CC from Nile's book. I guess I've got a couple of weeks to get some of them down.

Could somebody check the link and let me know if this is the right tune?Originally Posted by (glauber @ Jan. 05 2006, 22:54)
TIA
There's a banjo version on this page.

That is definitely the tune. If you go to the Tabledit files on Mandozine there are three or four variations available.
Thanks! This is the version in Jethro Burns' book (although he plays it a little different in the CD that comes with the book). I guess this is a good tune for variations. cool tune
I listened to the banjo version above, and it has fewer melody notes than the version i have.
One of the TablEdit versions is the Jethro-style. That is the one I am learning. There is also a Monroe-style. These two are considered intermediate! If you have TableEdit, listen to the advanced version. I just laughed and moved on. Maybe next year.Originally Posted by (glauber @ Jan. 06 2006, 15:38)
It is a fun song to play, though, even as slowly as I play it.
Does anyone know why I cannot access the mandolin project website (not the Yahoo one)? I haven't been able to get to it and i've been trying since last week.
