Just received this wonderful instrument from Paddy Burgin. It is beautiful, the workmanship is excellent and it sounds great. I am extremely happy with it.

Congratulations! Beautiful!
Is the top Aus. Blackwood or Koa? Is the whole thing that same wood?
Thanks, and enjoy!

Wow, that looks nice! I'd be really glad to hear how the sound stacks up against a spruce-topped instrument. (I'm got on Paddy's waiting list last Summer and may have to make a decision some day.)
Is this the "standard" Shanghai? What scale length are you using?
Thanks.
Steve
Thanks! The scale length is 560 mm. Having played both this and a Foley OM, over Christmas I can make a comparison. The Foley is also a really beautiful instrument. If I were to stay within the realms of my descriptive powers I would say that the sound is different from a spruce top OM or Zouk. If I venture out, I would say that it has a more volume and sustain than the spruce top and maybe a bit of a deeper sound to it...

Another Shanghai is born. I have had mine a couple of years now and bewarned, these things are powerful. Mine is much louder now, than when I bought it and they cut through any guitar in a session...........wonderful:D
I was just there the week before that's why...I mean.. I've loads of hair.. and stuff.. can't be that.. really.
here's a pic of my SOS... similar body shape... can't wait for a head to head!

That all Tasmanian Blackwood Burgin is gorgeous. Yeah, it's interesting how similar the body and peghead are to Stephen Owsley Smith's work. SOS has been doing that asymmetrical two point shape since 1990. Perhaps "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery?"Originally Posted by (craigtoo @ Jan. 05 2006, 16:48)

That's interesting. I had certainly heard of Tom but never seen his instrument. Wonder what Stefan was looking at when he designed that, with the symmetrical points? Quite different from the asymmetrical, Lyon & Healy influenced ones that SOS developed in 1990.Originally Posted by (Steph @ Jan. 07 2006, 09:54)
