Thread: Hey blues guys; Cooder project?

    Folks
Among other cool Ry Cooder blues mandolin parts I'd like to learn is his input on Love In Vain by the Stones (studio version).
If you have the recording and are interested in learning it also, maybe we could start this as a project.
Some details to start; the tune is a Bb (fear not!!) and the main line is really just the blues scale. The tricky part for me is a few doublestops. And of course his usual impeccable feel which really can't be TAB'd.
Any takers? Let me know. Different Cooder tune?
I can hand TAB out what I have and scan it to get the ball rolling (may take me a few days to get to it).

Love Ry's old stuff...Billy the kid, Roosevelt in Trinidad, etc. Anything you would care to share... #

Sounds like fun! I don't have the tune though. Let me know when you get the tab done. If you're not doing it in TablEdit, I can try to input what you write out into a .TEF file. Then I & others can here it in MIDI - with no groove feeling, of course.

OK! I'll get it down this weekend and we can start.
More then anything, I want feedback if it's wrong; my hearing plays tricks on me.

Update; I have the first solo written out and will sweeten it up over the weekend. I'll have it scanned on Monday AM.
As with every attempt I've ever made at TAB, it's a suggestion at fret/fingers; any improvements gratefully accepted.
The second solo seems like a reqoute, but is worth looking at too.
Once you guys agree it's OK, I want to reTAB it one fret down so it's in the more jam friendly key of A.
I guess it's time to move to the Project thread!

I yanked that Denver show off Dimeadozen, which is a great site for collected unreleased material.

I have a gob of unreleased Cooder stuff I've collected and recorded over the years, but the Ebbets Field show is a winner for his mandolin work.

Also try to get ahold of Ry and David Lindley in Osaka, Japan in '78.
Their mando/lap steel duets are just killer...

I never got it done. I didn't have a chance to listen to the song to tab it out before putting into TablEdit. Sorry!

Hi mandobob, this is an old thread, don’t suppose you have the tab for love in vain still, I’m trying to write it myself, would love to see your version

I assume this is that same F-4 nearly fifty years ago. If anything, it's gotten bolder, stronger, and fuller-sounding. Could be the mic, too, I suppose. Could be that Ry has developed some, too.

But that's just my opinion. I could be wrong. - Dennis Miller
