Luthier time is very ... flexy... #It's not good to rush perfection... <GGG> and in fact, it can't be done.

Posting best wishes is a real nice way to blunt deep feelings of jealousy. #LOL!!!

    I can't play melody. #Foo.

    Patience, Judith, dear....

Thanks Steve. Your advice is a good way to think about the circumstances of waiting. I am being patient. J

Really, I think more luthiers should employ the "Scotty" approach to giving info to customers.

"Ya canna change the laws of physics, Jim... it just canna be done! #She'll be at least 3 months a-building!"

and then when they pull it off in 2 and 1/2 months, it's a MIRACLE!

I e-mailed Chris today with some ideas for inlays - perhaps a celtic cross or a Tlingit totem symbol or a Chinese character. He has been so responsive and easy to work with. He e-mails right back and is open to ideas.

Believe it or not, though, I am not anxious and really don't care if it takes him a long time to finish the mandolin. He does great work and I know that it will be quality. I don't want to rush that. Perhaps I am in the minority when I say that...I have other instruments that I will play during the wait and I have an oval hole Rigel mandolin coming next week from Vermont (in memory of my father who passed away in Middlebury, Vermont in December) or so which will be finished in my favorite color (more on that when it arrives).

It is funny though with MAS. I have never been a particular collector of instruments. I have been satisfied with my bass for years. But mandolins seems to be different.

Yes, I love the Raven and the Wolf. I think the Wolf may be for me, as it is "my sign" and symbolizes "passion."

I just noticed these pictures. What a brilliant inlay. This looks like a spectacular octave. The wait will be well worth it: I love my Arches F4 and play it daily.

Here's a couple more pics that Chris just sent me. He's in the finishing stage now. I think the cocobolo looks great. Judith

Wow, nice. I love the patterns in the cocobolo. Thanks for sharing. Makes me think I should put down a deposit for one ... thanks for sharing.

Hmmmm... what's this in front of me on my desk? Why, it's a check for a deposit commissioning Chris to create my new F4!

I just got off the phone with him, and after a lengthy discussion I think he will be creating an heirloom for me to enjoy for many years to come. Of course, it's almost gonna be a few years before I get to play it, but with patience comes grace.

Thanks for bringing his work to light for me, Judith. I wouldn't have found him without ya'!

Gerry - Oh my. Is it really gonna be that long? Chris's F mandos look gorgeous. For that matter, so do they all. By the way - where are you? Judith

    Hi,

I was a little extreme. Actually, he tells me he is quoting 1.5 years lead time. That is fine with me. Of course, I wish I could have it tomorrow (don't we all? *L*) but I really look forward to working with him in coming up with a custom fit that will be a joy to play.

I live in the Northeast outskirts of Mesa, Arizona. About 30 miles East of Phoenix (as the crow flies). I'm roughly 400 miles from Chris' shop, so there might be a road trip arranged during the critical times in the build? That will be based on Chris' availability.

What a nice guy, huh? I imagine you've had a great time working with him on your beauty?

Cheryl - I just got your email and responded twice, but it keeps coming back as un-deliverable, so if you see this, try again. Sorry. Judith

    Hi Judith,

I'M sorry my email is not working for PMing.

I read here that Chris' lead time is 1 1/2 years or so?

Will you post pics of your OM strung up soon?

    Thanks,

    Cheryl

Yes I will. Chris said he is finished the "finishing" part, but has to let everything dry for a couple of weeks. He thinks he can ship in about 3 weeks. Will put pics up then. Judith

    woo hoo, Jude!
    so begins the countdown....very exciting!

Has he strung it up and given you any sense of the sound? Or will it be a mystery until it arrives??

Its ound will be a mystery, I believe. He said he had to wait for it to dry to set it up. I have a good feeling about it - odd for someone such as meself, whose middle name oughta be Eyore. J

Hi Will. I've been away for a few days and am still not home. BUT, I just had a chance to check email and saw one from Chris - I'll post the pics as soon as I am home. She's strung up, looks beautiful, and he says he just played her at a jam and thought she sounded great - resonant, balanced, strong middle. He's off on a family vacation till the 15th and will ship asap after that. Ah...those final days... Thanks for checking in. Judith

Hey y'all. Here's some pics. Chris says he loves the octave and has been playing her a lot...I think he's decided to become an OM player, too. She'll be comin' round (over) the mountain in a week or two. Judith
