Just tried getting on the cafe via www.mandolincafe.com and got some page saying that the domain is for sale. Obviously not initiated by our esteemed webmaster. I got around it using the .net URL. I'm assuming this problem is not limited to me... but just checking...

    no problems for me either....

I have found I can accidentally hit the wrong key and end up with something like mandolincave, or mandolincage and it doesn't look wrong until after I hit enter...

Karen - I have no problems with accessing mandolincafe.

However, it reminds me what would happen whenever I would try to access comando.com instead of co-mando.com...

I'm not sure if it's still the case but comando.com used to be an "adult" site

it's not a typo issue, as I am using bookmarks, and it even happened to me with the Home link FROM here on the Cafe. Scott sez there might be an issue on my end. I'll look into it... thanks, all, for taking the time to provide some feedback.

It might be some bad DNS issues with either your local resolver cache or your ISP.

    Karen,

I had this same thing happen with my ISP's home page when I would access it from work a couple months ago, but not from home. AT&T handles our WAN & Internet routing and DNS for the company... it turned out they had some bad DNS entries that had propagated from somewhere. If you're getting this error from home you should try contacting your ISP, if it's at work your IS staff might be able to chase it down. Otherwise it may clear up by itself as the DNS tables refresh.

Thanks for the help, folks. Since it's not strictly work-related, I think I'll spare my MIS dept. the query and see if it clears up by itself.

Sometimes (rarely) when the cafe home page is down you can go to www.mandolincafe.net which brings you directly to message board.

Did that, Tom... that's how I was able to post the message.
BTW, I DID inform my MIS dept, and they're aware of the problem...is happening in odd and unpredictable ways on a number of agency computers.

thanks again for the help, all.

I have two computers and the same network at home. One I get the same message as otterly2k, but this computer works fine. The one started giving me that web site right after the Cafe web site was down for upgrade or something about a year ago. I've still not been able to get this web site on that computer.

Maybe you've tried this... but if you haven't clear the cache in your browser on the machine that doesn't work. It may have cached the bad page.

You can also see if they're using the same DNS server by typing "ipconfig /a" (or "ipconfig /all") from a DOS command line. If they're using the same DNS server and not loading a cached page they should come up the same.

I think we've long since solved the old stability problems here- as I check my stats, I see that as of today we have been up without interruption for 6 months

We take mandolins pretty seriously. I can't quite guarantee 24/7/365, but we come pretty close! Generally speaking, an apparent outage of the cafe is likely an ISP problem, typo, or local issue. I used to try to load www.google.com to see if my net connection was up, now I test using the cafe home page!

If you're on Windows XP or 2000 clear your machines local DNS resolver cache with the command ipconfig /flushdns (from a command prompt).

He won't say it, but I will. Dan went through a ton of interviews with Google for a major sysadmin position. At the end they said, "thanks, you were easily the most qualified candidate, but we need admins that speak multiple languages." He knows his biz.

Cafe stats for the week look completely normal for this time of year and I watched logs in real time for awhile when this was reported.

*cough* yes, well as it turns out I took an even better placement right here in London, but generally speaking employers prefer you not to toot their horns on mandolin websites so I'll refrain

It turned out to be a local problem, now fixed by our helpful MIS folks. Apparently other users in our system were experiencing similar problems with other websites(seemingly a random sampling).

This is indeed a very stable and reliable site, which is why it startled me so to get that weird screen. Thanks for all the help, and apologies if my report resulted in unnecessary work for Scott and/or Dan.
