Well played. I've never heard that tune before. Kinda sounds like a slip jig but more stately than the Irish slip jigs I'm used to. Really nice!

Thanks Chuck, it was I believe more popular in Scotland, and had a few different versions and names. I first heard it on an Australian site. I can’t remember which site but they had a load of tunes that were played with very energetic, upbeat rhythms. The Athole version has two sets of triplets in the A part (which sound good, but I removed) and has a slightly higher tempo.
The rhythm is slip jig but has something extra, an upright feeling which reminds me of the Northumbrian triple hornpipe tunes.

The Aussie site is somewhere here:

    Good luck!

I recorded this a few years ago on the occasion of what would have been my dear departed younger brother's 64th birthday, about this time of year. I used my 1916 H-2 mandola to accommodate the chord fingering I liked and my voice, often contentious. I'm not really dressed up; those were my work clothes at the time. Hang in there for the big splashy finish.

But that's just my opinion. I could be wrong. - Dennis Miller

it's the kind of tunes I like to play. I used to mess around on a uke but bought a mandoline during lock down - it's addictive

Malk - I agree recoding yourself is a great way to improve, when we play we focus on the different notes and parts of a tune and tend to hear the whole thing. John McGann used to talk about playing in front of a mirror, mostly for left hand development. Sounds like you are getting good tone and solid notes, I think a metronome may be advised for the timing. Also try some scales and arpeggios in the keys of the tunes you are playing, and its fine to go what ever speed you are comfortable at.

I heard Frankdolin playing this one on the SAW Group and decided to add my version. It is a beautiful tune written by Scottish accordionist and composer Phil Cunningham and is called Sarah's Song.

Thanks for the tips! I’ve found when I try to record that I seem to tense up and it takes a fair few attempts to get through it in reasonable fashion. I think when I play without recording that it just flows so much better (but as I can’t play it back I may be deluding myself )

Man I dig Moravian music, love Budicek, I suppose Turkish Oud would not have been unfamiliar in early Eastern Europe, particularly Moldova and Bulgaria. The melodies have Turkish and Persian aspects incorporated, I suppose musicians tend to copy each other in thier travels.
    Well done.

Thanks! And yes definitely - parts of south-eastern Europe were under the Ottoman Empire for centuries, and other parts were vassals, not to mention trade etc.
Since I've had a few people ask for the notes for Budicek, here's my transcription:

...and here's the original flute notation I transcribed it from:

I'd be happy to share more of my transcriptions in the sheet music section if people would be interested (don't want to fill up this thread).

I haven't played this particular f5 in months, until a couple of mins ago. I placed some nickel & steel strings on and was struck by how little sustain it produced compared to the f5 I typically play. It was kind of surprising and I kinda like it. Is this just a function of the strings selection? Thank you.

I always wanted to play Tony Rice's Mar West, and with some help from Wayne Benson I put together this version on Mandola and Octave Mandolin, while not true to form hopefully true to Tony's improvisational spirit.

Thanks Frank, its actually a very hard tune to play on mandolin, somehow the fingering is easier on mandola. It took me about two years to get to that speed.
On the Mar West album they just state the head once- then Tony solos (the infamous trill bend) for something like 30 bars, then they play the tag and the fiddle and mando solo with the tag separating those sections, then they state the head at the end. Just one of the tunes built for soloing over, in the Miles Davis kind of vein.
I had worked up some longer solos, but I felt the tune really needed to be stated more than my wild amblings (mostly minor blues). I did the octave intro by accident, and found it worked with the presentation.
Its hard to find people who are familiar with this music let alone those who are willing to try and play it.
Dawg music and the associated Tony Rice Spacegrass to me is what Monroe or Stanley Brothers is to others.

Thanks for the tune tmsweeney..although I can't really play Tony/Dawg music, it's also the gold standard for my listening preferences. Those guys and others really opened my eyes when I was in my 20's. Enterally grateful... nice playing friend!

My wife has been out of town for several days. So..for me that means staying up late and picking mando and making up stuff that is "music-like". Here is one of many "music like tunes" from my weekend.

some might say neither can I...

I liken it to Piazzola , its in its own genre and while widely respected its not played as much as other contemporary forms, the die-hard listening and performing crowd is somewhat of a smaller group.
A lot of is very accessible and playable, thanks to Dawg publishing a lot of the notation ( often with tab). Its not uncommon to hear a less than hyperhgrass version of EMD at just about any BG jam these days.
The young people I play with around the scene here have heard of Grisman and probably have seen him live, but they are not very familiar with his catalogue, they all know Tony Rice mostly from the Church Street Blues Album but also from J.D. Crowe and the New South. The whole Darol Anger, Mike Marshall thing is deeper still.
At any rate keep in pickin and enjoying the dawg music.

(Been learning some great tunes from Joe K Walsh, John Reischman and Marla Fibish, this one is Sharon Gilchrist’s first tune that she teaches on her intermediate bluegrass course at Peghead Nation).
