I was perusing the Ozark instrument catalogue last night and some fine instruments were to be seen.
    Then I saw IT..........
    The resonator, metal bodied Bouzouki.
Lord have mercy, what can that sound like???
It would take the skin off your face I would immagine.
Someone please tell me I was hallucinating.

I've played one in london. Interesting sound, though in my opinion a resonator tenor guitar has the tone you'd want over the double strung reso-zook!

    Honest Dan,
I dont want a resoanything, but I can summon up (in my worst nightmares) the evil sound of this thing.
Is it a traditional instrument would you say or the result/aftermath of a terrible either binge in the ozark design room?

heh. Well i can see your point, they do take some getting used to in the visuals department too.

Just in general, I'm a big fan of the cone sound, either wood or metal bodied, and the whole family of the things. They are pretty tempramental to maintain & set up, but the results once everything is in order are quite nice.

I briefly had an ebay-purchased National Supro mandolin. Pretty shrill tone on it, dropped down to Eb or so it was really nice.. it's now a blues machine for a friend. Mandolas.. I played one by the same guy who made my reso-tenor, it's quite nice. Actually in the london reso centre right now, probably a web page on it. I played the ozark reso-zook there too.. nothing really unusual there, just a bit janglier than a flat-top bouzouki. I think personally I don't like double-strung reso instruments. Seems kind of redundant. There's plenty of tone and drive, and a purer note seems to work better with the "honk" of them.

Cheap nasty resonator instruments can sound horrifyingly bad. The nicer ones have subtlety and depth to them, and really are wonderful soulful instruments

You do have a very good point actually, i'm thinking of sam bush on 'hold on were etcetc'. I think its a resonator mando on that? anyway, that sounds superb but then again as you so rightly point out that will definitely be a good'un(quality mando)and he is sort of half decent on it to say the least.

Its not the price its the playing one that would result in my untimely death.
Tell you what though, Dan should have had one in the mandolin/zouk fight thread.

Here's an earlier CBOM thread on the Tyler Mountains; didn't get bad reviews from those who tried them. I'm a bit of a resonator instrument freak, so I'm tempted...

Did someone say they were available elsewhere at a lower price?

I have the Tyler OM and love it. I did have to make a new bridge as some of the strings buzzed. Easy fix and worth the trouble. I really love my national mando but that cost 1600 bucks.
