Mars Hill is only about 20 or 25 miles away from the Flag Pond area where Cecil Sharpe and Maude Karpeles gathered folk songs.

If you are into roots music, I really don't think there is a better place to live than this area of East Tennessee, Western North Carolina and Southwest Virginia.

just don't be in a hurry to get anywhere when the slopes open up in the winter. you can't get around when the folks from FL and S. Ga. start driving on those curvy roads.

with all these people in the area, we should have a Cafe get together at some point

I'm in if the Mars Hill gang wants to get together. I live in the Ebb's Chapel area off Puncheon Fork,(Mars Hill mailing address)and up the mountain. Kind of in the boonies but there's a good pickin' porch on it.

Well it's not that far from you Coops. First exit off 26 after you cross the state line.

    Well....
Here is what I see when I sit on my porch and play "Smoky Mountain Schottische."
And the mandolin does ring and reverberate off the hills!

    Hey Coop and jbrwky,

I found your conversation interesting, my Dad was raised on Foster Creek and went to school at Ebb's Chapel. He was quite the picker himself playing mando and guitar in area bands back in the thirty's and fourty's. His uncle Fred and Aunt Annis lived on Rice's creek just up from Flag Pond, and were ballad singers, and my great aunt Annis picked a mean clawhammer banjo. I remember times as a child, visiting them. My dad on mando, aunt Annis on banjo, dad's cousin Brady on guitar backing uncle Fred's high lonsome ballad singing. Good old memories. Thanks.

p.s. I thought that there used to be some jams at the old Little Creek cafe, maybe I'm wrong? #Hi to Evan Reilly...the original "Lil Mon"

The Little Creek Cafe has changed hands and I don't know of any jams there anymore.

Your mandolin sounds sweet. Who made it?

Nice version of St. Anne's. I'll be at The Jack of the Wood this Sunday, since we'll be in town. See you there?

It's a 2003 Flatiron Artist made in Nashville and signed by Danny Roberts, although he did that at my request since they don't sign them usually. Ralian, I'm not going to be in town this week unfortunately since I'm going to Kaufman Kamp next week. Sorry to miss you and maybe we can meet up another time. I'd like to meet all you guys if I could ever stop this work stuff. It's really starting to interfere with my personal life.

Thanks Brad, we were using Baldassari's version which only shows the Em. How does your chord progression move in the B part?
