I've recently been playing this tune from W.K. Bauer
book for mandolin and guitar, but know little more about
    this piece.
    Anybody know more about this?
    thanks

Nel cor piu non mi sento is from an opera by Giovanni Paisiello (1740-1816) called La Bella Molinara. Extremely popular -- there are variations on it by composers such as Beethoven, Sor (for guitar) etc.

I also found variations by Paganini with mp3s here.
