I have a early 90's Gibson F5L - bought it used - sounds great, but the lacquer finish is "blistered" for lack of a better word and flaking off in places. I'm guessing this may be the result of heat - not sure though. There is no structural damage and it plays great. Any suggestions for this type of finish repair.

My recent "Gibson history" might not be too good here...was Gibson in Nashville in the early 90s?
If they were still made in Montana by Flatiron, the finish is probably Fullerplast, and not nitrocellulose. If it is, about the only repair is a refinish.
If it is lacquer, a spray with IBIB, Butyl cellosolve, "lacquer melt", or other relatively slow evaporating solvent will stick the finish back down.
