    Hi all,
I was just wondering what the widest nut width that you've encountered in 20s Gibson mandolins. There was a 20s A4 with a huge nut for sale at Elderly a while back--something like 1 7/16" if memory serves. I'm assuming 1 3/16" was the standard--anyone come across big nuts in Gibsons of this period?

It's actually one of the things that keeps me from buying a vintage mando--my custom 1 1/4" has me spoilt.

I have an A50 from the 30s with a 1 1/4" nut. It really feels wide compared to my other stuff. It feels like playing a guitar in comparison.

Then there's the skinny ones of the Loar era at about 1 1/16".

What years had the wider nut and how wide was it? when did they get narrow? and did they stay that way?

One data point: my 1921 A-jr #68884 (just before the F-5 era) has 1-3/16". It feels markedly wider than any of my mandolins other than my wide-nut-option Mid-Mo M-0, which is 1-1/4".

From others here at the cafe, I've heard that both the pre- and post-Loars had wide nuts, but the Loar-era mandos had narrower ones.
That means the wider ones are cheaper! I played a pre-Loar A model at Gryphon a while ago that was noticeably wider than my 1 3/16" Rigel.

My 1919 A-2 has a nut just over 1 3/16". I don't have it here to measure, but my 1920ish A-jr feels slightly narrower, possibly because it's unbound perhaps. The oval hole A's seem to hover around 1 3/16", but in past threads on this topic, it would seem there is the typical vintage Gibson variation. I suppose the snake head oval A's are different, and consistently narrower, but I've never played one.
