Here are some pics of my Herwiga Liuto Cantabile I won on e-bay. It needs some work but is in pretty good shape considering its age.

A Liuto Cantabile is a 5 course Mandocello with a high E course (CC GG DD AA EE).

Some of the frets are loose. The markers are the 15th and 17th frets.

Thanks guys. It was a great find.

    Scale is about 23.5".

Looks to be beautiful workmanship. Eccentric bowl shape, very interesting. I'm especially in awe of those machines -- the way they seem to be made so simply -- being one who wishes he could make his own keys. So simplified, as if you could take a stamped backer, and choose how many holes you'd like, 6-string, 8-string, 10-string, trim the blank, install the keys, and you've got instant tuners. This has me thinking now... (I'm moving out of the city finally. I can now sand cast, stamp, and smith!) Thanks for sharing, Craig.

Rodgers, the king of customized tuning machines. Their basic style is patterned after the classic Baker machines made in England in the early-mid 1800s.

The bowl shape is, of course, a riff on the mature Roman-style compound curve.

Your're welcome. There is some discussion on it in the "Bowlbacks of Note" thread (starting on page 141 ) in the Classical forum if you're interested. Everyone wanted pics so here they are.

Craig, have you heard any of the solo music Calace wrote for such beasts?

Thanks for that link, Eugene. Rodgers... Who knew? In days when globalisation is such the buzzword, someone who mires for the days of old has found something new to lust after!

No, I haven't heard any. I knew he wrote some. Do you know of any recordings of such?

Calace recorded a bit with the instrument himself. Orlandi recorded one of the preludes on:

Orchestra di Mandolini e Chitarre "Citta di Brescia." 2000. Manodlin & Japan. Nuova Era, CD 7348.

I was going to list the liuto works from the Calace catalogue, but I don't seem to have it in the computer from which I am writing. Soon...

I promised this a long time ago. Sorry for the oversight, Craig. Liuto-specific excerpts from the Calace catalogue (the prices are from 2003 or 04, so anybody with newer should feel free to comment):

Keep in mind that anything involving "mandola in sol" or "mandoloncello" would work too, no adaptation required. Including those involves almost all Calace's chamber music.

Distributed with the permission of a member of the Calace family, here is a link excellent Rafael Calace course as well as the compositions for liuto cantabile, listed only as liuto on this page of methods and music by Calace from the Italian Mandolin Federation.

    Enjoy!
