I started a discussion about 4 string 'cellos a while back over HERE. I'd be interested in hearing/seeing more discussion as I'm committed to having an instrument built and want to this more thoroughly before the building starts in a few months.

I have a 60's Martin D-28 that was converted to a four string mandocello. #The scale length remained the same and seems to work just fine. #It is much easier to play than many 8-string cellos...also a different tone for sure. #It's like playing a bass or baritone version of a tenor guitar!
