I am fairly illiterate about this sort of thing. I was wondering how you would put a site with roughly this skeleton together. The different intricasies of the board and the classifieds place and the instructors and builders and so on. I didn't want to bother anyone that didn't feel like answering with a pm. And the cafe posters may know a thing or 2. Whatever amount I assure you its more than I do.

Well, the first thing you need is Scott Tichnor.

Or, if you can't get him, get Scott Tichenor.

I think you need to learn html or Dreamweaver.

This started (I believe) as a basic simple html site. A couple of years ago he changed the whole layout to function with CSS. The forum is, for all intents and purposes, a separate entity, tho linked to the other site. If you notice the url is mandolincafe.net not org, tho it can exist on the same domain. There are also search functions and callouts to databases (builder list for example). More recently Scott has added RSS feeds and other advanced functions.

If you were intending to create a similar site in functionality etc. you would need to know more than a fair amount as a web developer. I am a mere web designer and am familiar but skilled in only some of this.

The Mandolin Cafe was created and is maintained by human hand using vi, the Unix command line editor. Dynamic content is compliments of Perl, the little programming language with no marketing department.

Beyond Scott (and my typo above) you might want to look at this product. It is what the message board is built on.

The cafe is a blend of pretty much every web technology that is available. Some parts are pretty straight html. A lot of javascript goodies scattered around. This forum is a canned product that has been customized. The builders section is a database (MYSQL?) with a cgi (probably Perl?) interface. There are probably pieces that Scott did a while ago that he would just love to update but since they still function they remain as is.

As with most sites this one has grown over time. You would need a staff to plan and build this site from scratch.

So, is it X-braced, or does Scott use tone bars?

Lots of tech talk (CGI, CSS, Perl, etc.), but the real story about how the Cafe works: "all you need is faith and trust, and a little bit of pixie dust." (P. Pan)

This is top secret information but here is a chart as to how the cafe actually works.

Putting a site together does take some time and has it's challenges... various web applications that need massaging... code snipits... etc... The real time drain would be managing this message board. It takes a TON of time to deal with I'm quite sure. As big a pain as it is, I think it's an excellent resource and worth the effort... some days

    Thanks Scott!

Daniel, there are a number of open source frameworks that can be used to build robust websites. I'm not speaking of the 'cafe specifically, but you've probably noticed that a lot of the social web sites look and function very much the same, in the way houses tend to be the same--windows, a door somewhere near the middle of the front, a garage attached--you know, they're not all identical, but you know a house when you see it.

I have a hosting account with powweb.com that I use for experimenting with different open source frameworks. If you go to their website and look at the "free applications" you can install on your hosted site, you'll see that there are a bunch of blog apps, forum apps, content management apps, wiki apps, shopping cart apps, classified apps, and so on. You still need to understand html and server technology to use this stuff, but it's a heck of a lot easier than writing something from scratch!!

I have a nice, fast server sitting behind my desk, but I find it far easier to mess around with these different apps using Powweb than trashing my own server with installs that I might not like. It's worth the (darn cheap) annual fee just to have the service as a learning environment.

Well, if you speak geek, it's built on heavily-tuned linux, apache, mysql, perl code, mod_perl code, html, CSS, and a lot of elbow grease.

Scott's all the content and design, which is really quite staggering. I'm the engine room and managing the increase in traffic and keeping the response speedy.

Dan, it could be worse. You could be trying to keep all this running on a Windoze server!
