not to hijack the thread, but I have an Alan Bibey, so I watch with interest threads and classified postings on all of the Gibson signature models. I have read great reviews about most of them....sound, playablilty, etc, and I am very surprised to see the values dropping quite steeply lately. I know the list was right around $ 10 K and now there's a ton of them available for right around $ 5 K. I would have expected them all to hold their value a little better...sign of the times, I guess.

    Jimbob,
What is it about the Bibey that is different from the other Gibsons? Alan is teaching a mando class this summer here.

you can see the pics and specs on one at the Gibson website, but it is basically cosmetics...they have a small sunburst, pretty dark finish, tortise binding, flowerpot peg head inlay, flat fret board, gold hardware, laquer finish. I don't think the Bibey's were as popular as the Bush and maybe the Lawson, but the ones I have seen are really nice mandos. My mandolin teach told me that my Bibey is the best Gibson he has ever played and he's been at it a long time.

Just reading this 20 year old thread....I have a Steffey model and absolutely love it, the radius is comfort on my old hands and the tone is wonderful. Yes - its also a piece of artwork in my opinion. Just beautiful. However....I don't play it as much as I should (Primarily using my Gibson Goldtop the most). Should I move my Steffey so it can be enjoyed more by someone else?

The F holes give the sound? I thought it was that fancy truss rod cover
When you consider a small paper signed label makes some mandolins sound better than others no reason to believe the bound F holes could not do the same![/QUOTE]

    Thank you!
You can't get there from here.
