I am very anxiously awaiting my Collings mt to be delivered today. I was wondering if I need to be concerned about opening it right away. I know that going from cold to hot can cause the finish to check. I do not think it is cold enough to be an issue, but I want to see what all of you think. The low today was about 30. Thanks for the help!
It is sudden changes in temperature that cause the problems. A 20 degree change is usually safe but if you want to be really careful bring the whole package inside and wait 1-2 hours for each 10 degrees (F) in difference between outside and inside temp. Then if you want to be extremely careful you let the case sit for another hour or two before you open it.
The only way for this to actually happen is to bring the package in the house and then leave the house until enough time has passed.
That last line was as true as I have ever heard.
The waiting is tough. If your Collings MT sounds as good as mine, then you will be a very happy picker. Enjoy!
i'd take it out of the box, quickly open the case to see if the instrument is cold. if it is, close it back up for a while. if it feels normal, go for it.
Better safe than sorry...
Weigh the risk against how you would feel if it does happen, and act accordingly.

Just open the box and have fun with it. People around here worry WAY too much about this. Sure, if it's -10 outside and it's 72 in my house, I'll let it sit and acclimate a while. But if it's above freezing, you're not going to do any damage, at least in my personal experience of buying/selling somewhere north of 30 instruments.
