I was looking through you tube to see if there were any vids of mandolin building. I found none. I did however stumble on this vid of the Gibson factory showing the body glue up process for the ES-339. I know it isn't a mandolin but the building process is very interesting. I particularly like the air pouch used to provide glueing pressure. I think it is an air system anyway.

Edited to add forgotten link, DOH!

ES-399 plates to rim assembly, quite interesting

Not a video, but this is a nice photo essay of Lynn Dudenbostal building Thile's #14 (and one for Gary Hendricks):

That video (3 parts) was GREAT! Thanks for the link! Makes me want to learn how to make mandolins.
And I saw that John Sullivan passed away a little more than a year ago - a few days after I bought my mandolin. I'm glad he left a legacy of the art of instrument-making behind.

What a treat to watch John Sullivan building. I noticed that he wasn't using hide glue. Nor were then on the guitars in the Gibson factory. There's also an interesting piece on YouTube at the Yairi workshop in Japan, where they do use hide glue. What most got my attention was the craftsman carving the neck with a knife, with beautiful wide but thin shavings, rather than with a scraper. Takes a lot of effort and time to get that degree of skill. Sullivan was, I think, right to see mandolin making as the highest level of fine carpentry.

I have a line between carpentry and fine cabinet building. Carved instruments are yet another art that is incredible to see a master perform.
