    Default mandolin scale

So, here's a question to anyone who knows more than me about classical (bowlback) mandolins...........that would be anyone at all.

Having bought some from the "broken bowls" auction, fixed them up, and played them, I am struck by the easy fingering on the smaller fretboards. Not by the tone, mind you, probably something one becomes accustomed to, or gets by buying a really good one.

The question is; would the fretboards on these compare to the "violin standard"
available on the Big Muddy mandolins, or the older Mid Mo's.? The scale seems to be pretty close to 13".

    Thanks in advance.

Back of the envelope Physics : with the 7/8" shorter scale [given same string thickness]
High E pitch is reached at a lower tension.
... do you think that is a factor in your perception?

Compared to most American-style instruments, bowlbacks tend to have shorter scale length, lighter strings (smaller diameters), and lower action. All of these factors can make them seem easier to play. So if you don't like the bowlback sound, you can go to a shorter scale non-bowl instrument. And yes, 13 inches is roughly violin scale. Or you can try lighter strings, or a lower action.

    Much thanks,

The next construction is going to be a flat top with 13" scale. In the winter. When there's nothing else much to do. Except shovel snow. Which we all like to do.
