I love this video -- Vince Gill is not only about the best singer on the planet --he can also play the strings off just about anything -- anyway my apologies to anyone who has seen this already.

Is that his Loar he's playing? The recent pic of that instrument in the Fretboard Journal were amazing.

I thought it was the Gibson Bill Monroe #1 that Amy bought him in an auction and surprised him with it. It's hard to tell from the Youtube video. I would imagine that Vince has more Mandolins than Carter had those....liver pills ☺
It cost no more to go first class...You just have to pay a little longer....

Here is Vince on the mandolin again -- this time with his daughter Jenny.

I got a kick outta Vince forgetting the words in the video with his daughter. At IBMA Fan Fest this year, the same thing happened on a different song. I am sure this has NEVER happened to any of us....
We all have our moments. The audience took it well and his band mates were cracking up. So was he.

Danny Roberts can outplay Vince Gill on the mandolin, hands down!
Molon Labe
Maybe so, but he didn't do it on this video. In the spirit of seeing if the Emperor's clothes are really invisible, Vince's mandolin sounded thin, like the action was way too low and he was pounding the strings too hard, but the break was a coolly structured solo. Danny may have wanted to hold back, because his break was fairly tame, but the mandolin sounded a lot better.

Vince does indeed own one of the Monroe models that belonged to Monroe (there were two sold at auction and at least one other out there). However this did look to be his Loar unless it was a DMM. Hard to tell these days on poor quality resolution if it's new or old. Danny looked to be playing a Loar too! I think the sound problem was in the sound system not in the mandolins. The Opry has a wonderful million dollar amazing sound system but they put a $10 an hour guy behind the knobs to run it. It seems they just can't get it up or down fast enough either on the TV portions or in live shows as I have heard first hand from the front row. Acoustic acts seem to stumble them when it comes to getting it up on sound quality. Throw out on stage Roy Clark or Little Jimmy Dickens and they will be out front and center every time. Go figure! Too much risk of feedback so they would rather not go there to get it right. And add to it Vince was trying to reach up to the vocal set mic to get his break while Danny had his own set mandolin mic. And probably Vince does not keep his strings up there with the heavy hitters since he is pretty much a whimpy low string electric guitar picker these days.
Anyone who knows the past performances of Vince knows he can cut it on the mandolin with any of the big boys.
I have nothing against Danny Roberts he is as good as they come and his name is in my best mandolin.Danny Roberts can outplay Vince Gill on the mandolin, hands down!
I'd probably concede the mandolin contest to Danny.
But now let's see how they match up on guitar and vocals!

Why does it have to be a contest?? They are both outstanding musicians that can play the heck out of a mandolin. Vince plays pretty much anything with strings and does it well while having one of the most powerful, distinct voices in all of country and bluegrass music.
Danny has been involved with the building of Gibson's best mandolins in the last 80 years and is the mando picker in one of the more popular bluegrass bands, though they are a bit "modern" for my tastes. I'd be honored to meet and pick with either one of them!!

The more I see this guy playing bluegrass
THe more I like him.
Vince was playing his latest Loar, it is a great sounding mandolin and he is a great player.
I was playing my 1922 that I got that night, I got in in my hands about 30 minutes before we did the show and loved getting to play it for the first time on the Opry.
Thanks

I saw the Grascals last night at a Woodsongs taping. Great show! Watch for it on the archives.
They did a full hour, and I have a new appreciation for the group and all the individual members.

p.s. on the subject of VG, if he got any better I'm not sure I could stand it.
