    Default Old Monroe Live Recordings...

I know it has been posted here in the past but Steam Powered Preservation Society has some great old live recordings of Monroe, Flatt and Scruggs, in addition to the stuff they have had on there a while.

Here is the link to the main website:

    http://www.thespps.org/

Check out Compton and Long, John Hartford has recordings with Compton on mandolin, and now there are some anonymous live recordings of Monroe and others from some old festivals.

I don't know who donated this stuff recently but it is awesome...

    Great stuff!

Don't miss the link about half way down the page:

"A significant collection has been given to the SPPS and we are happy to present the first tapes.
    (see mp3s)"

Be sure to look around that site and find the Bill Monroe and Norman Blake impromptu set, performed during a set break by the Country Gentlemen, that is smoking!

That site looks great, need to investigate more, thanks for posting.

And try to find the Monroe on the bus 1966 showing Richard Greene some tunes, which has been widely circulated. Great stuff.

There are apparently several versions of 'The Bus Tapes' of Monroe showing tunes to Greene. Different tunes on the different collections.

I love the kitchen jam with Hartford, Blake, and Tut. It's great to hear super-pickers just having a relaxed, fun, and often humorous jam that nonetheless features loads of high-caliber pickin'.

Very nice site --wonderful thing to do. A real treasuer of old recordings.

I plan to send them a contribution but I do not think they will survive very long with the current set up.

They seem to be offering "memberships" but there is no incentive to be a member -- maybe they do and I missed it?.

I think they need to come up gimmick that gives some kind of special advantage to the folks who join.

Maybe restricting downloads for non-members or something like that?
