The early photo of Charlie with a Gibson was a 1934 Gibson Jumbo.
No confusion here after decades of photographic studies of Bill's two prewar D28 guitars. The first one bought used around 1940 was a mid 30's D28 Martin. It was used by all the Boys up until late 1947 when it was stolen from the car while on tour. Earl has told the story and photos back this up. The 2nd prewar D28 Martin was a 1939, bought used in 1949. I suspect back then a 10 year old used Martin was pretty cheap, likely half the price of a new one. It came with the oversized factory pickguard. That guitar was used up until Pete Rowan's time as a BG Boy at which time in summer of 1966 it too was stolen from a car in downtown Nashville. No serial numbers were recorded for these 2 guitars.
