Taylor Baker, impressive for age 15 -- I would say. Anyone know about this kid?

For a second I thought it was this kid grown up.

He's already learned the benefits of the acoustics in a stairwell at the age of fifteen. I have to give him major high five for that simple enlightenment. Now the mandolin playing is a kind of enlightenment that I can not relate to. There is no fear in the young! Dan
Play em like you know em!
He's got the Thile thing down for sure. Think of how good he'll be in a few years.
Mike, those Tuttle kids are crazy good. I think the eldest--Molly--played at IBMA this past year, and can flatpick a guitar like nobody's business. Good on Dad.

Mandolin evolution at work!
Looks like his older brother can drive a mandolin on the four-lane too!
They would benefit from throttling back a bit -- but they're young.

If you think that's bad, you should have heard the 6-year old mando player I heard last weekend... 'he's been playing since he was 4'... and he was playing Wakefield! How his short little chubby fingers hit those chop chords, I'll never understand. Dailey & Vincent brought him up on stage to play with them. How come I haven't learned as much in 2 years as he has?!

Now I recognize them. They're in a family band out of Indiana. Baker Boys Bluegrass
The Baker Boy is from Martinsville Indiana. I've been seeing him at Bean Blossom since he was about 9 years old. His parents would take him from campsite to campsite to pick. His big tune at that time was Rawhide. His parents would dress him and his older brother (a banjoist) in matching stage clothes.
I competed against him at the Indiana St. Picking contest in 2006. He was 1st. He played some Bach piece and Lime Rock (if I remember correctly). 2nd was Solly Burton, the other Indiana mandolin phenom, who went and won the Winfield mando contest last year, and my old sorry butt won 3rd.
Baker and his brother have played the Grand Ole Opry as guests of Mike Snyder. I remember hearing them on there 2 or 3 years back. From what I understand, this Baker went and played with Karl Shiflett for a summer, but I could be wrong.
He's a nice kid who has developed some incredible chops. From what I know of him, he's pretty driven to make a career in music so keep an eye on him.
Jim
Thanks for the information -- I'll have to keep an eye on their schedule next summer -- they perform close enough to me.Tracy Tucker:Now I recognize them. They're in a family band out of Indiana. Baker Boys Bluegrass
It is amazing how fast they have progressed. Talent, there is no substitute!

I need to pay more attention to the Indiana scene.
Here is Solly Burton's web site. Clean cut looking young man with talent to burn.

BTW where is west central Ohio? Are you over in Darke or Mercer on the boarder or west of Columbus?

There there....
remember, they only have homework, which they HAVE to finish before they spend every waking hour noodling.
You spend WAYYY too much time (loud slapping sound) on here to be depressed....or to noodle.
Now think of it this way....someone in this thread mentioned the word 'fearless'. Kinda like Tiger Woods on a golf course.
'xept we codgers get the yips when we putt. I can play lotsa fast tunes until that one DUMB passage comes along and literally handcuffs me....

these kids are all talented, but like a lot of adults i know could really use some time with a metronome.

i don't mind the no shoes, mike, but after teaching lessons for years and years it would be refreshing to find a kid who can zip along in time..........just my personal pet peeve.

Well, kids can be taught, I don't know if adults can. I've been in some jams where we were lucky if there were just three different beats going on at the same time. Tuning and the correct chords were optional as well. If these kids are as good as they are now, they'll get the rest as the get older.

Both Jesse and Taylor can pick. Jesse was playing banjo with KSBC and then Mandolin. Looks like he's now playing Banjo for Mike Cleveland and Flamekeeper. Impressive.

It's easy to have some tempo variation when you're trying to impress with how fast and clean your picking is. This is true in just about every YouTube "check me out" clip - especially the thrash metal ones.
I kind of agree with you -- I probably could lisiten more closely and found some variations -- but to me changes in tempo weren't so obvious as to distract. But some are probably more sensitive to it.sgarrity: Where were they not playing in time? I'm not trying to be disagreeable here but I'd like to know for my own education.
The main impression I had -- besides them being dang good for their age -- was they were playing very fast -- maybe so fast that they killed some of the finer aspect of the tunes?
But that is a personal matter also.

They were playing fast. But fast is ok sometimes. Doc and Dawg did Soldier's Joy at roughly the same tempo. I haven't put a metronome to the clip but I just don't see much to be critical about. I see two teenagers having a darn good time pickin' the mandolin. Something I wish a lot more kids were doing......

Well, young Mr.Baker has all the notes, but not the timing (yet !). Personally,i thought that his tempo was too fast & lacked the 'spaces' that Chris Thile has in there. BUT - having voiced my crits.,he's one to watch out for i think & nice clean playing by any standard,
