    Default Early Grisman

Continuing with delving into Dawg's past, came across a live recording - Great American String Band at the Great American Music Hall, 12-June-1974. Opening track is a fun tune called Bud's Bounce. I have this on Phil Rosenthal and the Stockwell Brothers Old Dog, too. Dawg & co. do Dawg's Rag, well before the definitive version on the Quintet record, same lines to it. Also, Spud Boy is on this gig, and sings Russian Lullaby, which made it to his Compliments record, sans mandolin.

I think the band included Richard Greene, not sure who the main guitar picker is. Banjo is probably Bill Keith.

a similar setlist to 6/13/74, there were indeed two

    different shows.

That stuff isn't really 'Early'; find his Red Allen stuff, or New York Ramblers.
He has an 'album' entitled 'Early Dawg'; mite could be even digital now.

There's an old Verve Folkways album, Hazel & Alice, with Hazel Dickens and Alice Gerrard (Foster, Seeger etc.). I believe it has Grisman on mandolin and Lamar Grier on banjo, with the two women on guitar and bass. Probably '60's vintage.

    Later: found this on eFolkMusic:

Bolstered by their experiences, Hazel and Alice recorded their first album for Folkways in 1965. Backed by some of the finest players in bluegrass -- including legendary fiddler Chubby Wise, David Grisman on mandolin, and banjoist Lamar Grier -- the album was electrifying, and featured several original songs by Hazel and Alice. A second album for Folkways was recorded, and the pair continued to perform.

I believe the 1965 album was called Who's That Knocking; Hazel & Alice was a later one on Rounder.
