The ONLY way to find out,is to ask the man himself. I'm sure that as long as the finish wasn't actually something he'd rather not be associated with,Tom Ellis would build whatever you wanted. I wish i was in a position to order from him,he's one of the top 3 builders i'd approach if i had the cash,
    Saska
    Weber F-5 'Fern'.
    Lebeda F-5 "Special".
    Stelling Bellflower BANJO
    Tokai - 'Tele-alike'.
    Ellis DeLuxe "A" style.

If you were wanting one of his mandolins, Carmel Music has one of his new A models for sale right now for less than five grand. Pretty good deal if you ask me. Tom's mandolins have a very warm, complex tone and his workmanship is perfect. There is not a single imperfection on my F to be found. It doesn't seem like he does as many custom options as some other builders, but you would have to ask him to be certain.

I think you could twist his arm. As far as I know he's not done a blonde since he started building again, I did see an older one that was more of a natural. You can't ask for a better mandolin or a nicer guy to deal with than Ellis.

thanks for the input guys. Chris, I have seen the A at Carmel and i know you can't go wrong with these mandos. right now our aussie dollar is back to being wimpy otherwise i'd have it sent over ASAP. there will be others i'm sure. patients is a virtue i'm told, ( usually by the finance minister ) interesting that a blonde of this caliber ( no imperfections ) could be termed a custom option as usually a sunburst is more cost..on guitars at least.. while i'm here may as well post a pic in case someone HAS to buy it and i can forget Santa might feel the need to give me an Ellis for christmas..

You can probably expect to pay more for a blonde mandolin from a private maker as it takes perfect wood and perfect execution for appearance sake.

One of the finest sounding mandolins I’ve ever heard was a show piece blonde Ellis with a stunning quilt maple back that Greg Boyd had a few years back (maybe someone has a picture of that one?). In general most builders don’t build blonde mandolins unless they are ordered because they are harder to make and harder to sell. The big market is in the traditional burst variety, in the high end mandolins anyway.

I have come very close to pulling the trigger several times on this over the last week! My Weber Fern and my KM1000 would have to hit the block but it almost seems worth it to me! The Art Deco inlay is to die for! The pickguard doesn't quite look the way I would like but the rest is perfection! Somebody buy this thing and put me out of my misery!!

Ken, I've seen some bound pickguards on Ellis' before. Tom would probably make one for you if you asked him. I wish Tom had made A styles back when I bought mine. It would have saved me a ton of money.

You'll enjoy talking to Mr. Ellis. As great a guy as he is, you'll enjoy playing his mandolins even more.

The Sumi is a little monster. The Ellis is even sweeter.

Ask him to build you an F5 Special model... and tell him what you want.
