Thread: Mandolin Hut

    Default Mandolin Hut

Does anyone have any experience purchasing online from the Mandolin Hut? I'm getting ready to buy a mando and they have some deals that seem attractive. I know from experience though that online mandolin dealers aren't always what they are cracked up to be.

    Thanks!

Thanks Mike for providing the link to threads. That set my mind at ease.

The mandolin I got from them had a twist in the neck, and I sent it back. They were excellent with the return/refund process. (They no longer carry that brand, either.) Their set up wasn't great--they'd put the strings on and tuned it, but that was about it. If you can set it up yourself they're decent to deal with, in my experience.

Thanks GDAE. That's the main thing I was worried about was the setup. I bought from another mandolin store (online) and the setup was horrible - they destroyed the nut by cutting one slot way too deep, and it was all just a big mess. Since I live in a remote area and have to rely on online purchases for mandolins, I think I'll go with Elderly - they have a pretty good reputation I think.

Elderly is great and so is The Mandolin Store. You can't go wrong with either.

I bought my first mando from them this past may, a Kentucky 150s and it played nice from the
start.. of course what did I know, it was the first mandonlin I really picked up. I've played it
many hours since then and it seems fine.

I agree with TDM. I bought my first mandolin from Mandolin Hut. It is a Morgan Monroe MMS8. It sounds ok to me but what did I know as it is my first Mandolin. My teacher seems to think it sounds ok. I think the strings were not good and I will be changing them soon. The employees were helpful enough on the phone but not overly so. As a beginner I wanted a bit more guidance but did not receive it. They were pretty much like these are the mandolins, these are the prices and what else do you want from me. I am learning on this instrument and plan on having it for awhile, at least until I can afford a Collings or Weber. After being a faithful reader and student on the Mandolin Cafe, I have learned that it is best to actually go to a place and test drive the Mandolins. When you buy sight unseen as a novice, you get what you pay for and you get what they send you. I think at first you are so excited that you just pull the trigger on an internet purchase. But the more you research and learn about this instrument, you will find that the best way is to sit somewhere and play various Mandolins and then make an educated purchase.

I purchased my Rover 75 from Mandolin Hut; it was positive experience. I was a bit concerned in the beginning, i.e., online company, etc; however, the setup was great, but I had to change the strings, a bit corroded.

I've read nothing but good things about them on here. Elderly, FQMS, and Janet Davis Music are also good vendors that I'd buy sight unseen from. Although, my first choice is to drive down to FQMS and play in person.

Was just there on site today. Good guys. the mandos I tried were setup OK. way better than most of the guitar stores I go to in Illinois. the only complaint I had was that Knoxville highways are all torn up due to construction, and it took about 5 phone calls to finally locate the place. after being there and meeting the guys, I wouldn't be afeerd to buy from them.
