Can anyone recommend "slow downer" software that is good and cheap? I have the trial version of the Amazing Slow Downer but it only works on the first 30 seconds/quarter of a song.

    Thanks!

That long sought after combination of words...good AND cheap.

Audacity can slow down audio, as can GarageBand. I'm about to pull the trigger on the Amazing Slow Downer. I like the looping features and the interface is simple/straight-forward.

I recently picked up the "David Grisman Teaches Mandolin" lessons on CD. It didn't take long to figure out I'm going to need something to assist me in transcribing the audio.

I have tried several and really prefer Transcribe. (NFI)

It's easy to use. I just transcribed Will Patton's solo for "Rue de Rosiers" using this and Tabledit. I flip between them to figure out notes then write them down.

You can try it for free.

Here's what they say about the evaluation version: "You may download Transcribe! and use it for 30 days evaluation period for free. If you want to continue using it after that you must buy it."

What Larry said about Transcribe! many times over. I've used it to assist in transcribing as well as learning by ear. It's well worth the money.

Transcribe! is a fabulous program! Check out what various users have said about it:

Another vote for "Transcribe!" Before I bought it, I A/B compared free download versions with the Amazing Slow Downer, which is also a great program. My conclusion was that ASD was a bit more user friendly, but Transcribe! had better functionality.

If you are really looking for cheap and easy, though, Windows Media Player version 9 and higher will do basic slow downs, using the "Play>Play Speed" pull-down, so you may already have what you need.

The free version of the A Slow downer will play the first two tracks of a cd. You can burn a couple of songs on a disc and study all of the tracks.

Best Practice doesn't sound as good as ASD, but it's got all the features you need and it's free.

For those of you who are Mac based, there's a new entry in the slow down software arena.

I have NOT extensively compared all of the various options but have been briefly using and getting good results with Capo.

Unfortunately, it won't work on anything less that OS 10.5.

Not sure about the others, but IIRC, ASD can import TEF files if that is a selling point for you.

I've been using Best Practice for a few days and it seems to work good. And the you say the best part is it's FREE!

I got Capo last week for $9, and it's very good. The price jumped when it hit 1.0—now it might be a bit harder to swallow. But it's a beautiful little program and actively under development. Hopefully it'll only get better.

Transcribe! is great. The sound file waveform makes it easy to find exactly which notes or part you're trying to figure out.

Ditto on the Capo app for the Mac. It's the first slow down app for the Mac that looks and acts like a Mac app should.

Retraction: please disregard my last -- I was thinking of TablEdit's ability to import ABC files, and though a cool feature, it has nothing to do with thread.
