    As a beginning player, is it considered proper pick hand position to lightly rest the heel of the pick hand on or slightly behind the bridge? Does...

    Yes, that is proper hand position. Doyle Lawson said he does/did that, the key is no downward pressure on the bridge/strings.

    Depends on who you ask. And to a degree the type of music you want to play. There is a wide range of proper.

    A lot of good players do it that way. Others maintain a stable hand position by brushing their knuckles against the pick guard/finger rest or planting their pinky on the top. If you search the message archive for 'pick guard' you should find a number of threads that go through the pros and cons of the various possibilities.
