Some guys baby their mandolins and have a meltdown if they get a tiny scratch or ding... and then some guys just play 'em. I would have to say that Mr. Thile falls into the player category.

I've heard that some people drool over Lynn Dudenbostel's instruments.
Not that I ever wanted to peer into Thile's nostrils, but ok.

Dudenbostel mandolins are worth drooling over (onto?)!
Looks like he gives himself similarly light maintenance! (But he sure can play!)

Considering how much he plays the darn thing and all the potential abuse it sees from traveling and being on stage, it looks like it's in pretty good shape to me!
I should mention that the photo was taken at the Station Inn in Nashville around November of 2007 during a Tensions Mountain boys gig.
a truly self expressed human being
i can't help but wonder where he's gonna' go as he matures further
and imho
at less than thirty years old, CT's already become a mandolin icon and has joined the company of Bill Monroe and David Grisman as a leading proponent of the mandolin
Seriously, give the man a tissue!
That's a great post though. I like to see people like him who are so talented act like regular people and have pictures taken of the inside of their noses.
I can't say I wouldn't be kind of uptight about dings in a brand new mando. Up until a year ago I was playing on other people's instruments (and not very often) so I don't know how I'll feel when I personally invest in a higher quality instrument, but I actually like the feeling of being able to beat up on it a little bit and not worry so much about giving it a little character.

Maybe he felt it would have a higher resell value if it was stylishly "distressed".
In his interview with Acoustic magazine, Feb 2007, Chris Thile said of his beloved Mando "It sits next to me at dinner, it sits with me on planes and it never leaves my side."
Which may explain its slightly worn look.
Cool guy, though.
Cheers
Charles
Yeah, but does he snuggle with it at night? That's the way to tell whether he's the "real deal" or not.
Has anyone seen this yet?. . .

Just posted a week or so ago. In addition to some great playing, the clip really shows off the Dude, from a number of angles, too. It's really a gorgeous instrument, broken headstock and all!
Wow, great piece! Thanks for posting that.
I may not be current on Thile trivia. What is the significance of what appears to be the word "Hole" on his trussrod cover?
His nickname is "speedhole" after the holes in his Wegen pick.
Maybe he should buy a truss rod cover that says "Chip".

Wow! Thanks for posting that Mac.
I love the angles they got, really shows off the Dude and his technique.
Here's a follow on YouTube to the one posted above where he talks a bit about the piece. Unbelievable!!

this dude can play... um, that dude...
Wonderful dynamics, softness, expression....very 'soothing'.
Watch these clips with the active thread about Monroe in mind. I don't expect Monroe played any Bach in his whole life, but I expect he could have.
Thanks for posting, that was really wonderful.

Love that shot from behind the peghead. Amazing that they were able to position & light for a half-dozen cameras while keeping the impression of an informal setting.
