Would someone explain to me why some ads in the classified here continue to run after the item has sold? Why do people post a SOLD addition to the ad, but then leave it up? I'm missing something here....

Good question. I've had the same thought. I think its to show, "Hey, I did it!"
If I'm correct, the classifieds run for a specified length of time. I don't think they have the option of deleting your ad before the time is up. But I could be wrong; it's been several years before I sold something through them.
I usually give a few days test drive......and I've found sometimes they come back.
No harm in keeping the ad running until it is officially gone. That way someone
else can get in line, expressing interest, just in case.......
You actually can go in and delete an ad at any time, Tracy.
I think Art is on to something: possible back-up offers
I keep mine up until I get paid, just in case the deal falls through and I need to revert to my backup offers -- that way the backup buyers can still refer to the listing if I let them know the deal fell through and the item is available to them.

I guess these answers make sense enough. Thanks. I think I'd put a "Sale Pending" note on an item I'd 'sold' but hadn't received money for....just me, though.
If I am looking at an item and I come back later that day or the next day to look at it again, I keep looking through the pages to see if it is there, even though I know it was only posted the day before. This may be just me but that could be another reason
As a classifieds browswer (and very occasional seller) I like to see what has sold. I assume the price paid is close to what is advertised and that gives me an idea of what things are worth to (at least one) buyer, not what the seller thinks its worth. I've got an ad "on hold" till the transaction goes through this weekend --- no money, ad stays. Once it's sold I'll say SOLD for the 48-hour return period, then delete the ad.
