maybe it's because he says "Al-ba-nee New York" on the title track, instead of what it's supposed to be... "AWL-BANY!"

I haven't seen him live lately, but I love his stuff. Plus, he clearly has good taste in mandolin players

    Does it sound like this?

(Elvis haters please ignore - also notice non-Compton mando content)

edit - ah, more searching found that the vinyl edition of the record is actually a two disc set (?) anyway:

Due to the division of the music over four sides, the vinyl edition will contain two additional tracks, an arrangement of Lou Reed’s “Femme Fatale” and Costello’s sequel to the old Appalachian murder ballad, “Omie Wise”, entitled, “What Lewis Did Last”.

    I likee!

Maybe not Compton, but a nice mando part in that clip, even if it is way down in the mix. Who are those people, besides Elvis?

I am watching Elvis Costello right now on Austin City Limits with Mike Compton on mando. Gotta say Elvis is a little "pitchy" to quote Simon Cowell but overall some good music goin' on... Mike doing a good solo as I type.

and yeah, Elvis C. almost always sounds strained in his vocals to my ears. But... you have to give him props. His song Veronica & the video that goes with it reminds me of people I know and he doesn't strain to sing it...

I'm going on now, but this guy that started out as a punk is bringing roots music to a wider audience and that's a good thing...

Yeah, just saw that again myself. And the second band, Band Of Heathens, featured some mandolin too. Yes, EC's voice is an acquired taste, one which I may never completely finish acquiring, but as with several others, the strength of his songwriting far outweighs the imperfections of his voice. And he does immerse himself in every musical area he explores. BTW, that was a helluva fine band he assembled.
But that's just my opinion. I could be wrong. - Dennis Miller

I definitely enjoyed the Austin City Limits set. Perhaps Elvis is an acquired taste for some, but I've been a fan since ~'77 -- I remember my brothers and I were blown away by his first album and I've never looked back. As was noted, Mike Compton is definitely in a backup role on this gig.
