    Default Bean Blossom Festival 2009

Any cafe members headed to the Father Land in Brown County, Indiana for the big one this year?
I understand the legendary Monroeite Mandolinist Extrodinare Evan Reilly will be attending on June 19&20.

The Father Land, I love it! I haven't absolutely firmed up my work schedule but I'll certainly be at Beanblossom a few days. It's still one of the great annual festivals. A must attend at least once in one's lifetime.

Well, shoot, if Evan's coming out, I'll make a point of being out there, as I yet have the pleasure to meet him. Are you going to be out this way too, Tom?

The Priceless F5Loar will be there. I may or may not have my Price case. That a heavy case to carry all day.
Anyway, questions of who has what case aside, we are both planning to play every Mon-boe tune we can remember. And some we only think we can remember!

    Now, let's see....
    Jim R. will wear Pointers....
I may try my Big Smiths...
    F5Loar doesn't do bibbers...

I actually gave up Pointers, Evan. Can't get them out around here and quality hasn't been as good.

I've been wearing Key bibs the last few years. If they were good enough for my grandad, they're good enough for me. "The Aristocrat of Bibs"!

Pointers quality not as good? Does Mike Compton know this? Do we have to find vintage bibs now? The only scratch I ever put on the back of a Loar was when I wore bibs. I'll probably be decked out in full rhinestones wearing a Monroe hat carrying a 50's shape case. The Price case is only used for transport to and from the festival.

The last pix posted here on the 'Cafe of Mike Compton showed him wearing Carhartts.
Now, Tommy, tone down the Rhinestone look! No one ever saw WSM wearing them kinda things.

Actually we did Tom. Compton's pretty much wearing other brands now.

I'm gonna miss that red zipper on the bib, but the quality of the Pointers is just not anywhere near the Key or Carhart bibs. Our local whiz kids, here in Kanzaland, The Oliphant Family Band will be at Bean Blossom, and they didn't even invite me. Kara is a recent high school grad headed east as a bluegrass student in Kentucky next fall. Champion fiddler and picks a mean MF5. If you see her, tell her congrats and have her pick some Monroe for ya. She can flat tear it up.

I don't recall WSM wearing bibs either ! He was always a sharp dresser. Porter Wagoner was a little bit sharper dresser. I'm in between ! If Doyle Lawson can sport new Nudie rhinestone suits who am I to judge? And when you can pick as good as Lawson then you can judge others on what they wear.

Mike Compton & I have discussed the issue of WSM and his preferred choice of bib overalls. We are of the opinion that he probably favored Red Camel brand; they were sold by the Belk chain throughout the South and made by the L.C. King company of Bristol, TN. This same company makes Pointers.

Evan and I will be at the Monroe Museum at 10AM on Friday. That would be a good place to meet. Evan will be the one with the beard and I will be the one without. We will be wearing "Loar Enforcement" Monroe T Shirts so should be easy to spot. From there it will be one continuous jam that will end up at the Rude Camp.

Drive 45 minutes to meet, greet and pick with the great legend Evan Reilly? Priceless ! Heck he would be worth an hour drive easy just to get an autograph. I'm heading out in the morning for a 10 hour drive to meet him. See you at the Museum in the front (well I'll probably be inside looking around at all that Monroe memoriblia) at 10AM on Friday. Bring mandolin for jam session shortly thereafter. Evan said he would want to do "Smokey Mountain Scotish" first up out of the can.

Well, 'Smoky Mountain Schottische' is a good tune to play first thing in the morning. A stately, sedate tune! Good choice F5Loar!
Ant that tune goes way, way back to Monroe's childhood.
