    Default Tabs and Keys

    I have just started to learn to single string and started with tabs of the Wildwood Flower. I have found it in the key of D, but would like to learn it in the key of G. Can anyone in the Mandolin Cafe help. Send to this e-mail address haleone@citlink.net or send to private message box. Thanks to all who reply.

    I'll just post it.

    I found some tab in the key of D - Assuming it's the same tab, in this case to transpose from D to G just move everything over one string, like

    Key: G

    E--||-------------|---------------------------------|
    A--||--4:---------|---------------------------------|
    D--||--4:---------|--0-------2---5------------------|
    G--||------4---5--|------------------4-------5---4--|
    Oh, I'll twine 'mid the ring - lets of...
    |---------------------------------|
    |---------------------------------|
    |---------------------------------|
    |--2-------4---2---0-------4---5--|

    |---------------------------------|
    |---------------------------------|
    |--0-------2---5------------------|
    |------------------4-------5---4--|

    |---------------------------------|
    |------------------------------0--|
    |--------------------------0------|
    |--2-------4---2---0--------------|

    |---------------------------------|
    |--2-------2---0------------------|
    |------------------5-------5---4--|
    |---------------------------------|
    Q
    |---------------------------------|
    |---------------------------------|
    |--2-------5---2---0--------------|
    |------------------------------0--|

    |---------------------------------|-------------------------||
    |---------------------------------|-------------------------||
    |----------------------0----------|-------------------------||
    |--4-------4---2---4-----------4--|--2-------4---2---0------||
    ... pale ar- row-net- ta with eyes of bright blue.

    I don't know the tune, nor have I tested this out, but in principle that will work.

    (If that's not the right tune, my apologies.)

    I guess I'll be the one to thank you for the trouble you took to produce this generous response, groveland. The Original Poster seems to have vanished from the face of the earth; there's no way of knowing even if he or she ever saw your post. Anyone else notice how often this happens around here?

    Keep pickin' Booger. Sometimes you have to be thick skinned around here ... I'm sure no harm was meant.

    Hey Booger and Groveland, why don't we discuss this over a beer? While picking the Wildwood Flower of course!

    Seriously, the "key" here, for the OP, is the magic of the 5ths tuning of the mandolin. If you have the tab and it's all on the E/A/D strings, then moving it down to the A/D/G strings will magically transpose it by a fifth down (e.g. D --> G, E --> A, F --> Bb, G --> C, Eb --> Ab). If there were any notes on the G string you're in trouble at least in that register.

    The simplicity of the tunes belies its beauty.

    Grisman tool great liberty with the sparse melody to throw in some early dawg bites to jazz it up. Try to find that version for some different ideas. Or come up with your own.
