Supply, demand, competition. Most people don't have the patience to wait for a product. His operation would have to be changed or upgraded to meet the demands of retailing. You're right, a long wait has nothing to do with selling in retail stores but do you really think that Andy Poe would jeopardize the quality of his instruments in order to keep up with a dramatic increase in retail production needs?

Gilchrist sells through Gruhns, Ellis sells through about five dealers, Kimble occasionally sells through Cotton and Carmel Music. Their quality hasn't suffered. I don't see how Andy Poe is any different.

I agree Chris. Some luthiers will sell low volume through a single retail distributer. I think Stiver sells exclusively through Elderly, and his production is quite limited. Same with Petersen. If there are not any in stock, you just have to wait for new production.

I hope he doesn't do it, I like the personal interaction with my luthiers.

Many folks can make a mandolin but few can 'paint' them. At least that's what I used to think. Now that he is also making Gibson Loar 'look alikes' I guess the mandolin buyers out there don't want something other than a Gibson 'Look Alike'. He get's credit from me for making mandolins a cut above the rest. That's beautiful wood, so in his hands, it becomes art work. More players should go for that.

33 is stunning. Even some non-musician friends looking over my shoulder got excited by that one.

I have #31 aclimating to the ambient house temperature and humidity. It's still in the box undergoing the systematic opening procedure. I should have it out of the case and in my hands in a couple of hours. I went with the one piece back, top of the line spruce top, and Waverly tuners. As far as it being a "Gibson" copy, I think not. It is an homage to a great design with some special features that make it one of a kind. It's nice to hear sibling #32 made it home successfully.

Just received mine today: #33. It was a long, interesting, educational and thoroughly enjoyable collaboration. It came out exactly as I had hoped, and in the hand, looks and sounds even better than I could have imagined. Go Andy! The delay was a move to a new and improved home and shop. Well worth the wait! The tone and sustain are just unbelievable. I play mainly Cape Breton, old time, Norwegian and some jazz/blues. With the Thomastik strings the action is smooth as silk. It is a real museum piece (although I hope it is at least several generations before it resides in one).

    Steve-o,
Thanks for the kind words. We tried to model #32 after 74002, the last recorded July 9th Loar, and Andy did an awesome job. Best of all it sounds as good as it looks. Andy is certainly at the top of his game.

    It's just like a Gibson.....................just kidding.

My new Poe is spectacular in sound, construction, and looks. I only wish that the people that provided positive comments on its pictures could play it.
