Man, this is about as good as music gets. I just got his new album, which I'm really enjoying, but I really prefer this with just the two of them. I always think "What if David Rawlings played the mando instead?" but I really just am glad to hear anything he plays and he has one of the best guitar tones of anyone I know.
Thanks for sharing!
I like playing mandolin to their CDs. There always seems to be an appropriate way to fit the mandolin into their music. Lots of fun.
Wow! That is a fabulous recording, and well worth downloading. The sparkling stereo sound and clear video reminds you of how much is missing on YouTube's lo-fi offerings. Put on your headphones!
Nice job Bob Boilen and the All Songs Considered crew!
Mandolin content: soundchecks with I'm On My Way Back to the Old Home. Someday we'll have a chance to hear Dave Rawlings tear it up on mandolin, i suppose.

Thanks for sharing that! Great moments of music were captured in that video!

The second solo is one of the best I've ever heard... on anything.
Swampy, I agree about that second solo. Kinda Monroe-esqe almost.
He's one of my favorite guitar players. And yes, there is a lot of Monroe in his music. Actually, I think a lot of it is his passion coming through in the music, just like Monroe's!

Gadzooks! What a great mini-concert. I downloaded it for future enjoyment. Thanks for the tip.
Gillian and David are two of my favorites. Incredible sound for just a duo.

David Rawlings has his own CD out now. I just bought it this morning but I havn't had a chance to listen to it yet.
You can't see your future in a rear view mirror.
There's a nice interview with David Rawlings by Scott Nygaard in the current (March 2010) issue of Acoustic Guitar magazine. You can read the article here.

Thanks Earl for the link to this great performance and thanks Paul for the link to the excellent interview with video clips. You guys made my Sunday morning.
I get the comments about Monroe but I always think Coltrane when I hear David solo. Something about the intensity. I thought Rawlings' mention of Chet Baker was really interesting too.

AWESOME!
I love the recent Rawlings machine album. IMO it's light years better better than anything Old Crow or David and Gillian have released in years. And I agree, listening to Dave's guitar work is never less than wonderful.
I really liked that article in AG - thanks Paul K - I didn't realize he was a Berkeley guy. I guess you could point to him now when someone says, "Name someone recording today that went to a music school!" Also how his life would've been different had he not gone to school..
It also discusses the rationale behind him naming this a David Rawlings Machine album, even though the personnel is the same as a Gillian Welch album.. I suppose you either like his voice or you don't. I found it interesting they had to arrange differently for his voice.
Haven't checked out the link to the AG article yet, but I was thumbing through the publication yesterday at First Quality and noticed some tab was included... I think I'll Fly Away was one of those.
Rawlings is one of my idols... love to hear him play.
Paula
I loved it in the AG clip 8 when he talked about playing the B3 and how he'd just keep those keys pressed and zone out. His solos in Time, the Revelator is one of my favorite acoustic guitar solos ever, I dig how those notes clash together!
Look up (to see whats comin down)
I saw the David Rawlings Machine last night here in Seattle and in many ways it was a David Rawlings & Gillian Welch show. David played with his usual eclectic flair and did some nice frailing banjo work. Along with songs from his solo recording he did more than few duo standards. He also brought out Benmont Tench (from The Heartbreakers) on piano, nice touch.
On a bluegrass note, they played Hot Corn - Cold Corn and I'm On My Way Back To The Old Home. I yelled out for them to play something by the Stanley Brothers to complete the trilogy, but they ignored me.

I saw the David Rawlings Machine this past Wednesday and it was AMAZING!! This is one of the best shows I have ever seen! Perfect blend of instrumental virtuosity (by Ketch Secor on fiddle and harmonica and Rawlings on his Epiphone), 4-part harmonies, a Bill Monroe tune, a couple of Dillon tunes, at least two Gillian tunes, along some comedic actions by members of Old Crow playing with 'em, etc. etc.
I will say that I enjoyed the show WAY more then Sam Bush, Edgar Meyer, and Jerry Douglas that I saw on Friday night. There wasn't even any mando content! Of course Bush, Edgar, and Meyer were amazing in their own right but not the same intense energy as THE MACHINE.
They finished the show with a four-song encore doing The Weight by the band, 2 I don't remember at the moment, and finishing with an A capella of Didn't Leave Nobody But the Baby!
Don't miss the opportunity to see them if they come to your town!
can't wait to see the David Rawlings Machine at Delfest and I hope the boys from Old Crow are at that show too!
the sun's gonna shine in my back door someday
Agreed!!! Saw them Sat night in Portland (actually saw them twice: they did an in-store at Music Millenium before the show at the Roseland Theater).
They did five encores (sets, not songs) concluding with "Long Black Veil." Incredible, inspiring musicianship from all concerned.
Hoping to work it out to see them tomorrow night in Olympia.
I was also at the show in Portland. Incredible. They also did He will set your fields on Fire!!! Great stuff.
