Default Contest - Help Name My Duo

    Hello,

For the last couple of years I have been performing with guitarist, Nathan Jarrell. We have been performing under the "unoriginal" and slightly boring name of Duo Acquavella/Jarrell. Alas we are tired of this long, undecriptive name for our duo. We feel that it doesn't fit what we are trying to do as an ensemble and lets face it, doesn't look good on advertisements. Nate and I would like to have a little contest to invite the mandolin community to name our mandolin/guitar duo.

    About the duo:
Nate and I met in 1997 when we were just young lads. We both joined a hardcore punk band that went on to sign two record contracts and tour the USA. After that band came to an end we played in other bands together such as Celtic/Irish music, Bluegrass, newgrass.....anything needing a mandolin & guitar. In 2001, I moved to England to pursue a music degree from Trinity College of Music in classical mandolin. Nate, on the other hand, went to SDSU to pursue a degree in jazz guitar. When I moved back to San Diego in 2006, it just felt natural to start playing music together. Duo Acquavella/Jarrell is a unique mandolin & guitar duo that combines my classical training with Nate's jazz experience, providing an exciting sound scape of repertoire. We perform a wide range of music including brazilian choro, jazz, contemporary music, classical and original compositions. Check my track MART on the mp3 page to get an idea of what we are about.

Nate and I looking for a name in the classic mandolin/guitar duo tradition......Duo Capriccioso, Duetto Giocondo, Duo Gervasio, Duo Calace, the Odieum Guitar Duo, the Amadeus Duo...etc.

    The Contest:
Please sumbit on this thread your name suggestions for our duo. Entries must be submitted by March 1st. The winner will receive a free copy of my latest CD, "Letters from London".

We will be performing live on a web-based show on March 8th. This might be a good opportunity to introduce the new name.

I look forward to reading some interesting names. Best wishes & good luck.

This may be too tongue in cheek but I always trip to AcquaJarrell. It conveys a nostaligic sense and theres something about an AcquaJarrell concert... ok enough with the old jingles. I liked Mart very much, by the way. Cool and smooth.

    I made this...

I don't know what it is, but there's something about an AquaJarrell band.....

LOL!! That's pretty clever. I can confidently say that this will not win. Classic picture though.

Right - any names referencing men's cologne will definitely lose. Duo Old Spice, the Gillette Duo....all out.

Perhaps you could combine the names, since you already have the letters in the second halves in common - sort of the Brangelina approach. Something like Duo Javella or Duo Jarvella - Jarella is too much Nate's name.

I'd suggest avoiding the Duo "insert Italian adjective", I find it boring and common... and usually the Duo has nothing to do with that adjective.

Depending on the type of repertoire you play, maybe you can play with words related to strings, repertoire (without naming a composer in particular, Duo mandolin-composer sounds just as silly as Duo Mozart, Duo Beethoven). Maybe if you think of the name as a graphic, like for example: Acquavella and Jarrell have "La" and "Re" in it. You could play around with the name as if it would be a Logo, you might get interesting results.

Combining the names is not that bad and Acquavella sounds melodic enough, I'm sure you'll be able to combine it somehow.

I started thinking in terms of Choro.

    How about something like

    Baroque River
    Baroque Back River (had to)
    Tone River
    Tone Chamber
    Baroque Rio

You get where I am going with this, I think...

Or, going with the idea that you play several types of music, including choro...
