Does anyone know of a nice clean straight forward recording of St. Anne's reel? I learn tunes by ear and I need something with a clear rendition of the basic melody.

Rob, My favorite version is off a CD called "Ultimate Pickin' Bluegrass Instrumentals. It has the best feel of the melody and timing. Wayne Benson....by the way. I've got instructional versions on guitar by Russ B and mandolin by Roland W but they don't come near the way the tune is played here in Canada. PM me for further info

I like Red Rector's version on an album called "Appaloosa" (Old Homestead). It also features Vassar Clements and Jack Hicks. Wonderful record and pretty straightforward rendition of the tune.

You could also grab the abc score off the thesession.org and convert to midi or wav (at whatever tempo you desire) and play along with that. Obviously the phrasing can be a tad mechanical...

Thanks folks. I think I'll start with the midi at thesession.org, get that under my fingers, then try to jazz it up a bit.

My favorite version of St. Anne's is Shad Cobb (fiddle) playing with the John Cowan band:

I like it. Perfect to start with. Thanks for that link.

The other links are great - just need to get the melody under my fingers first. Gives me something to do for the weekend.

    FWIW:
I didn't listen to the above YouTube....just watched but I think this is a good tune to bar the A and D strings with your first finger when you are playing over the Em chord in measure 4. Get a little more "sustain" that way

I struggled with it for a while, then it suddenly clicked.

I'll have to work on that, I don't really see it. Barring the A and D came naturally on Drowsy Maggy and Swallowtail Jig and The Butterfly (still working on that one).

The tab doesn't show "Em", and I don't know what it is right off the top of my head.

Rob, it looks as if you have it covered now. If not, PM me. I have an MP3 of a solo flute at reduced speed from our tuning learning class. I would need to get the flautist's permission before passing it on though.
