Default Foghorn Trio / Foghorn Stringband

I saw Foghorn Trio last night here in Lexington at Natasha's. What a great show!

It had been a really long day and I had second thoughts at the last minute about going, but I remembered reading a post where Bruce Harvie had raved about the band. I knew if Bruce liked them that much, they had to be really good, and they didn't disappoint.

Brought home a CD by Caleb Klauder, some really good original tunes - love everything about it.

I think they are in St. Louis tonight and Chicago the next couple of nights. You should go give them a listen if you haven't heard them before!

Hey, I'd take anything I say with a grain of salt, or else you'll be running down some Sun Ra recordings....

    Here's one you'll like, Paula...

Caleb grew up here on Orcas, and this is a recording I made the last time they passed through...

    Thanks, Bruce!!

Point taken about some of your recommendations...

I've been listening to Caleb's CD - WOW!! Some really good original stuff. I got my guitar back today after a long absence (top crack repair) and I've been playing along -- fun! Think I'm going to have to be singing some of these like 'Can I Go Home With You' and 'New Shoes.'

It's been a tough week (including the results of the guitar repair, a move, a couple of bad interviews), but a good live show and finding some new music really helped.

Lots of good live music out there, folks - go find some!

Sammy and Nadine are doing a fiddle workshop and house concert in St. Paul next weekend. It should be a blast. Sammy's brother, Eric, is a great old-time fiddler as well; he and his wife Teresa have been running the weekly Tuesday night old-time jam in St. Paul for a number of years.

Foghorn Stringband are a big favourite of mine and I'm very keen to see them when they're over on tour in Scotland in May.

They made a big impression with folks around Asheville, NC. Unfortunately I was in Nashville and did not get to see them.

I really hate that I missed the show in Asheville. This is one of my favorite groups, regardless of the configuration. The Foghorn Duo disc is worth going out of your way to find. Just excellent mandolin playing, and the quality of the recording is top-notch.

The last time I was in Portland (late 2007), I hooked up with an old friend from my days in Santa Cruz, CA whom I hadn't seen in years. Turns out he's playing with Caleb in the Foghorn Stringband these days, and invited me to their weekly gig at the Moon and Sixpence. For whatever reason I was inspired to do a little sketch of Caleb while they were playing that evening...I don't draw very much, but I thought it turned out kinda decent!

For those of you who are into recording, that Duo recording is a stereo recording, accomplished with 2 mics....

An RCA 77DX, and what looks like a Neumann U87...

    And it sounds fabulous.....

I'm delighted that the Foghorn Duo--Caleb and Sammy--will be opening the Kevin Burke's Open House Reunion show at the Freight & Salvage on Thursday, April 8. Details here.

Apparently Sammy saw us play a show in Minneapolis a decade or two back when he was coming up, and remembers it fondly. They asked if they could join us on a show down here, and we were pleased as punch to be able to include them.

    Should be a great night!
