Thread: Gibson Master Model vs Fern

These were some great insights into my question that got this thread started ( again I am sure). So, $7,600 for a standard Fern or $8,000 for a _lacquer_ MM new (with Grovers not $16K+ for varnished with Waverlies), from the same vendor: the choice seems like a decision no-brainer.

I must have been asleep or something, but are you saying that the Gibson Showcase at Opry Mills is gone?

I've owned 2 Master Models and a Fern. They were good instruments....different but good. Had a chance to play the Skaggs that Dave Harvey brought to a mandolin expose' that I hosted a year and a half ago. Now the Distressed Skaggs is a weapon......looks and sounds really really Loar like.
As it was said above by several of you, there are tons of choices and it's all good. Just pick one that you can afford and play away.

The opry mills mall in under water. I don't know how much damage, but I would suspect a good share of it is damaged pretty badly. No one expected the flood waters to rise to that level. The Cumberland river was expected to crest tonight higher than at any time in recorded history....at least since Noah's flood. It is scary to think the mall under water. Hard to imagine!

Don't see the comedy here but I'll say this. I know Shaun and the dude knows his mandolins. He changes mandolins like most people changes socks! He has or has had some of the finest mandolins you can buy.

It might just be his opinion but he most def knows what he is talking about.

This is such a great thread!

I'd love to hear them side by side, are there any high quality video recordings comparing a Fern to a Master Model?

Yes... and to be reminded of some of the MIAs... both helpful and otherwise.
"I play BG so that's what I can talk intelligently about." A line I loved and pirated from Mandoplumb
