    Default Old Wave F Style

You hear/read the high praises for the Old Wave oval A but what the F style that Bill makes in regards to tone, etc? I never see many comments about his F !

Owners are too busy playing them to comment.

David Long used one on his first recording, Midnight From Memphis.

I have not played one of his F-style instruments, but I got to play one of his tone-bar F-hole (A-style) instuments, which I assume would be pretty similar in tone and it sounded great! If I had the money in my pocket, I would have grabbed it on the spot.

Made 4 F5's in the last 100 or so mandothings, asked my doctor if making F5 copies was right for me, she said 'turn out the light and come to bed, ya ol fool!'

I have a f-holed C-sharp going off to a soon-to-be happy owner. It plays beautifully with sweet voice.

The only Old Wave I've ever had the opportunity to play was an A-style with F holes at Gruhn last summer. Nice meaty tone, and not overly woofy/throaty. It sounded like it would open up to have that great thick, old-style tone. I would imagine his F5-style mandolins would have the same type of tone.

I have an Old Wave F-4 style, built for me by Mr. Bussmann. It's exactly what I was looking for in an oval hole F style, clear voice, pretty loud, smooth tone, resonant, with a lot of the old Gibson sound. I also have a '20s A2 and F-4, and while the OW does sound different (maybe because it's a young 'un) , it has a lot of the same character.

I would say try one if you can.

Old Wave F-5s are great - love em! I had #74 and regret selling, but I still know where it lives. If I recall that one was from 1995, so maybe yours is right there. Bill may chime-in and let you know.
