Love this tune!
I'm not sure if the fella on the far right is playing a mandocello or some other variant, maybe someone could chime in & let me know just in case I stumble across some cash and want to buy one!
Thanks!

That would be the lovely and talented Wayne Benson on an open tuned mandola.
Thanks Alan! Please explain the tuning - could this be similarly accomplished (assuming a higher octave) on a mandolin?

The guitar is capo'ed way up there... looks like he is playing out of a G position at the 7th fret. A 'D' tune; open D tuning on the mandola.
And since std. dola tuning is CGDA, low to high, I guess Wayne does DADA for that number, or maybe DF#DA. Next time I see him, I'll ask.
That would be Wayne Benson's Tucker H5. He tuned it special for that song and came off stage in Mrytle Beach one year I was there and he handed it to me and I started playing the song exactly like he did. But I didn't bother to ask what tuning it was in other then an open tuning. Sounded really neat for a mandola.
Thanks folks!
It's great to get some background & insight on gear, technique, & the people involved in making music.
If mando knowledge was a country, this website would be China.

I worked on this song a bit today with a student on an octave mandolin capoed at the fifth fret.
