Just used the search function and read a whole bunch about tuners. I'm now an expert, so if anyone needs advice...................

Guess the best advice would be to use the search function first.

You have learned much in a short period of time. You have my greatest admiration and I'm serious about that.

EC has my admiration, too. I can't get the search function to give me answers that narrow down the results to manageable proportions. Mike: are there instructions anywhere explaining how to best use the search function?

[Yep, you've spotted it: I should be able to search for that, right?]

I honestly don't know. Let me look.

I just scanned through the threads and there isn't one definitive one I can give you. However, little secret that works pretty well when you can't seem to find what you're looking for is to use Google. In a Google window type:

    your search terms site:www.mandolincafe.com

You can get a bit more specific at times using Google...

or you could tell me what you're looking for and I can see if I can figure out how to get it for you or use my search tool that I have for the cafe to find it.

i've always thought "Ping" was an unfortunate choice for the name of a tuning machine.

i mean really...who wants to hear "ping" when they're tuning up?
    just groove, baby!

I still need your string labels!

I would avoid the Ping brand of tuners at all cost. My Larrivee guitar had them on it when I bought it and they were the worst tuners I'd ever used. The tuners on those Wal-Mart guitars are probably as good (or better) than Pings. A friend of mine bought a Larrivee around the same time and had the same trouble: horrible tuning stability. I can't imagine that the mandolin tuners are any better. Putting cheap tuners on a nice instrument is like putting flat tires on a brand new car. Makes no sense to me at all.

I'm astonished tha Larivee would use Pings. They're low-end replacements sold in blister packs.

I am too. The tuners on those Wal-mart guitars probably are Ping tuners.

I would agree with that -- if you have an expensive instrument, use a appropriate quality tuning machine -- makes sense.

But also the Ping tuners are (IMO) certainly worth the money you pay for them. I put a new set of gold Ping tuners on a Kentucky A-style mandolin (they were badged "Golden Gate") that I set up for a friend (circa 5 years ago) and they worked just fine -- she still has the mandolin with the tuners and they still look and work just fine. For the money they were a good deal.

As far as I know they are still using them on the satin-finished models. I'm sure their mandolins get better tuners, or at least I would think so. Especially with the price tag they come with. Don't get me wrong, I like Larrivee products, and my Larrivee is the best guitar I've ever owned; I was just surprised to find such low-quality tuners on such a nice guitar.
