Well, I enjoy using metaphors...even if they're abstruse, disjointed, incoherent, weird, outlandish, or just plain crazy..

Woody makes sense to me. When I play a mando(lin) I want to hear the sound of the wood resonating, the top and back vibrating, not the twang of the steel strings, like an unplugged electric mando(lin).

I guess the one term that everybody understands is LOUD.

Another vote for "plays like butter". That one is like fingernails on a blackboard to me. How exactly does butter play? And who plays it?

I too feel ill when i see "Gibby". KKind of like when some one calls you "Sport". But, what can you do. I know, lets start using Gilly, Nuggy, Dudey... um, wait a minute...

Kimby, Hesty, Colly, Elly........ you get the picture........... ugh!

But for the record, I dont mind Monte!

I had a Recording King resonator for a couple of days once that was just like that. I sent it back.

    Mojo.

I also dislike the word meal.

'Meal', as in payment for a playing job instead of money?

I've always disliked the word ax or axe in reference to instruments. Almost as much as I currently hate the phrase 'at the end of the day', but that has nothing to do with this topic.

Sounds lovely. Mine is exceptionally rich, lush, and intense, with layers of concentrated, soft, velvety overtones.

When I'm typing up a new listing, I usually try & keep it simple . I've been told to use more of these annoying adjectives as it will help, but I just can't bring myself to do it. And it seems my instintcs were correct; if this thread is any indication of potential buyers opinions, I'll assume these are some relatively safe descriptive terms:

Great sounding ; Balanced ; Nice ; Professional grade ; (have I crossed any lines yet?)

I'll pile in on how annoying 'Gibby' is to my ears. (I own four. Never considered referring to them as Gibbies.) Maybe the term will just go away, and take 'taterbug' with it.

I don't think anyone has said "open" yet, in regards to tone. I guess that's better than "closed" though, huh? Not sure what it means objectively...

This is one funny thread. I think you guys covered it all, and come on we have all used these words at one point or another.

Oh what about honest play wear ?. most of the play wear I give my mandolins is dishonest.

Oh, I don't think we're done yet. I'll add another that I've found increasingly irritating and I even use it to describe my own instruments: bell-like highs. Well, depending on where you attack the string it can be bell-like. It can also be shrill, immasculating, and so forth.

If axe is bad, wouldn't cannon be worse? An escalation of wheaponry? I'm guilty of calling mine Ugly Gibby, as in Betty.

    Mike,
it's not one of (actual mandolin content) those Mickey Mouse eared scroll things, is it? My uncle-in-law has one. It doesn't sound half bad but I have to look away.

    You forgot vituperative. And recidivist.
