Sorry about the cats that folks have lost. We have two (both pictured in this thread I'm sure) that are aging (15 and almost 17), and one is on a weight decline. We're not talking about it much, but when we travel for some time (as old retired folks might), we notice that they seem much more distressed over our absences. Anyway, it's one of those good/bad bargains we made a while back when we "rescued" them, and the bad part is kind of in our thoughts now. (We know, though, that the good has already won this bet.)

Sue, my sincerest condolences on the loss of your wonderful friend and companion, Smudge. When I first met my wife on July 5th, 1969 (I remember the date well because I had just returned home from the Atlanta Rock Festival and my mom said we were going to my brother's for dinner that evening and meet his boss and family; one of the family was a 16-year old young lady to whom I have been married for the past 52 years), she had a cat named Smudge. He had been a stray that she came across and raised as her companion. That particular Smudge was solid white and had a penchant for floating on a blow-up float in their pool. We didn't know anything about his background, but one thing was quite certain--Smudge was fiercely loyal to, and very protective of, my future wife. So much so that the first time I sat beside her on the sofa and put my arm around her shoulders, he was instantly in attack mode! One thing I felt good about--when I had to go back up to Tallahassee for college, he was her protector in Titusville. Many years ago, but I know now of two exceptional cats named Smudge. Thanks for sharing pics of your Smudge and, again, my condolences on your loss. ...Old Dog Dave

He/she was 17? A good long life for a cat, but it's hard to part with someone you've known that long. Sorry.

Not my cat but a bandmate's, I guess the case looked welcoming!

I wish my cat would sleep in the case instead of climbing on my legs as soon as I tune up, then digs her claws in if I do too much bouncing. Still I will miss her terribly when her time comes. I hope she makes it as long as Smudge. (What a great name!)

So sorry, Sue. They are wonderful friends and it is devastating to lose them.

Cindy, this is what my Essie has taken to doing. She wakes me up at 6.00 (even earlier sometimes these light mornings) to be fed. Then I have a couple of hours free to practice. So far so good, but then she climbs on my lap, which puts paid to any music.

If you watch to the end of this video, you see what she thinks of my recording music.

Thanks, my friends. Yes, Smudge was 17 this spring and she was with me since she was tiny. I'm thankful for how much time we had, but it also makes it tough because she's been in my life so long. Love how so many people here appreciate cats *and* mandolins

Sue, sorry for your loss. I always thought that it is amazing that we share our lives with the wee furry beasties. Cats, dogs, birds and other animals, it makes being human so much the better.
