I just got one of their albums based on the recommendations here on MC [a whisky kiss] and like it a lot.
Based on that experience, I'm awaiting a Matt Flinner disc and another Reischman CD I ordered from the recommendations here. I'll be coming back to this thread when the budget allows again, too.
Great thread, OP
I think I need to make an unlikely addition here: The Lovell Sisters Time to Grow, or any of the new Larkin Poe EPs released this year (they are named after the seasons). The more I listen to Rebecca Lovell's playing, the more she becomes one of my favorite mandolinists. Technically she's outstanding, and there is also a strong rock/blues feel to her playing and I really like that. Plus, IMO, her Duff sounds outrageously good on just about everything....Hard to not be impressed.

P.S.: Rebecca's sister Megan is no slough on Dobro either.
P.P.S.: I'm not just saying this because Rebecca let me play her Duff!
P.P.P.S.: This is a great thread! Great suggestions throughout.

Good one Rob -- what an exceptionally well performed and enjoyable CD, just mandolin and percussion.
Also, a different genre, but a similar concept is Jimmy Ryan's Mandolin: just vocals backed up by Jimmy's acoustic mandolin -- also great stuff.

This is not specifically a mandolin recording, but it has the best version of Lonesome Fiddle blues that I know. I have it on 8 track.

Ohhh, I've got one - Three Ring Circle - Andy Leftwich. An amazing super trio. I hear they're coming out with another one soon.
Also, any of the Bob Wills Tiffany Transcription albums. Tiny Moore!
I'll second A Whisky Kiss; Iain Macleod and his 10-string Sobell are featured prominently on this recording, and it's my favorite Shooglenifty disc (although I love them all).

Red Henry - Bluegrass Mandolin & Other Trouble - personally I think Red is one of the best ever!
Matt Flinner - any album

Well done the Mandocrucian, i was wondering if someone was going to add some variety to the mandolin, bring it beyond the BG/OT vortex.
Don't get me wrong folks, i do appreciate all the suggestions and reccomendations being made here, and i will when time and pocket allow invest, but, i also think that variety is the spice and all that, and i'm glad to see Andy irvine, Luke Plumb and Patrick Vaillant getting mentions, so to further that...
three (non-BG-OT) mandolin albums that i found in the last year
Tarantella Storta - Antonello Paliotti Trio
Tira Poeira - Tira Poeira
En Forme De Poire - Melonius Quartet
And (says he ignoring the rule of three) a neat little collection
Doce de Coco - Jacob De Bandolim

Nice list M.
While the list thus far is weighted towards BG, as well as OT to some extent, there are several other posts that are not BG/OT-specific. For additional suggestions in other genres, but please also check out posts by Ed Goist, Michael Wolf, Rob Fowler, Bill James, Markus, Mandolinista, and Wildpikr (as well as my own humble submissions ).

Even if I didn't have to exclude the biggie's cited above this would still be WAY up on my list.
Sam Bartlett's Evil Diane
Thanks for all the great posts! Sincerely, Mark
I tried to listen to samples of the recommended CDs and they were all great. So far I picked up a few of the recommended CDs. I’d like to pass on my recommendations for the following CDs which I never would have found had I not posted:
• Tony Williamsom - Sessions at McBane Mill
• Sam Bartlett's Evil Diane
• John Reischman - North of the Border
Going back to my original list, I highly recommend Butch Baldassari, John Reischman & Robin Bullock – Travellers to those of you haven’t heard it.
Certainly any additional recommendations will be appreciated.
Thanks!
This 2010 post resulted in a dramatic improvement to my CD collection, so thanks to everyone that posted! I would appreciate knowing what 2012 CD's folks recommend. Thanks, Mark
Everything by the band called Yarn (Andrew Hendryx)
I like to repost this every few years since I've been introduced to lots of great music by the posts! Hopefully others also enjoy reading the recommendations. I look forward to receiving some new recommendations. Thanks for posting!
Here are two cds I like a lot:
"Coming down fr. Red Lodge," by Peter Ostroushko -- He has a bunch of really nice cds. (Also, if you ever get a chance to hear/see him in person, do that.)
"Between Worlds," a new classical cd by Avi Avital. What I like about the cd is the variety of musicians and instruments on the cd along with Avi's mandolin.
Don't intend to steal thread, but I can't believe music nuts don't have a turntable for vinyl. I have everything from reel to reel to CD recorder. I even have an 8 track player, never know what you'll need to hear that great recording!
Tim O'Brien- The Crossing
Any of the John Reischman & the Jaybirds or Solo John Reischman, His new solo "Get up John" is great.
Chris Thile's Bach recording
Peter Ostrousko's "Mando Chronicles" and "Heart of the Heartland".
Mike Compton and Joe Newberry "Live"
Jesse Mcreynolds should surely be on the list. And Andy Statman; All of his records are worth checking out, but his latest; Old Brooklyn and Superstring Theory is a good start!
