Thread: 3 Favorite Mandolin CDs (not by Bill, David, Ricky, Sam & Chris)

Default 3 Favorite Mandolin CDs (not by Bill, David, Ricky, Sam & Chris)

I'm a relatively new mandolin player and would like to expand my CD collection to include items by mandolin players beyond the folks listed above. I've always been a huge fan of David Grisman and have lots of his CDs. In addition, I have a good selection of CDs by Sam Bush, Bill Monroe, Ricky Skaggs & Chris Thile, including many of the groups they have played with. When I look beyond those folks I know lots of names, but struggle to know which CDs to pick. I would like to get some recommendations, so please list your favorite CDs by a mandolin player other than the ones listed above.

    Here's my list:

    1. Butch Baldassari, John Reischman & Robin Bullock - Travellers
    2. The Anger/Marshall Band - Brand New Can
    3. Kentucky Colonels - Appalachian Swing! ( I love Roland White's work on this CD) If you don't think this one should be on the list, then please pretend I listed Aubrey Haynie - Doin' My Time

    Thanks, Mark

These might be hard to find- probably out of print- but great mando music would also include:

    Lou Martin, "Recent Work"
the Norman Blake / Red Rector album and Red Rector/ Jethro Burns album
Bobby Osborne "Bobby and his Mandolin"

    all of these are wonderful

Hmm- not sure. I have a cassette tape somewhere. . .I wish it would be re-rereleased on cd, or just for download- it's a great album.

Re: the Lou Martin album. There's a couple of copies of the LP on ebay for cheap. Go figure. I'd love to have this on CD but it's been years since I had an LP player. I don't think- after a not particularly assiduous search on the internet- that it was released on CD but I could be mistaken.

Hey- David Grisman- pick this one up for Acoustic Oasis!

One more vote for Jethro Burns -swing low sweet mandolin

Red Allen and frank wakefield - the kitchen tapes

The Del Mccoury Band .... Ronnie mccoury is one of the top bluegrass mando pickers playing today, sticks more to tradition than Sam, David, or Chris. Personally one of my top guys, [preferred to Sam and Chris actually]

Great idea! I came to the same conclusion about LP release only and like you, I don't own a vinyl rig. Yeah Grisman, what are you waiting for?!

Ouch, tough call since there are so many albums to choose from. Here are some thoughts:

    1) I agree with Douglas McMillan that you should get something by Matt Flinner. My person favorite is The View From Here that has everything I love- well composed pieces, great playing on a wonderful sounding mandolin, a fantastic backing band, and no self-indulgence. Every note on this CD is a good one. Highly recommended.

    2) Butch Baldassari and David Schnaufer : Appalachian Mandolin and Dulcimer. Great readings old fiddle tunes (lots of modal ones too) with a wonderful dulcimer drone throughout. The two instruments really complement eachother and it's a great introduction to the mountain dulcimer as well.

    3) Marshall and Anger : The Duo Live At Home and on the Range. Something old and something new. Impeccable playing from the first to the last note. FYI, a couple of tunes don't have mandolin but the playing is so good that you don't miss it. (And fiddle's a pretty close mandolin relative anyway.) Masterful arrangements as well.

Happy listening to whatever you wind up with. Great thread!

Oh- yeah- ditto on the Statman "Flatbush Waltz" album.

It's more accessible, I think, than some of AS's later work.

It's nice to see this mandolin gem being discussed. I'm always amazed at how many great players I know have never heard of Lou Martin or this record. I'd love to see something happen to put it in the spotlight. I'd also like to see a "10 Questions for...) with Lou Martin.

I'm pretty new to the mandolin scene, like...within the last 5 months have I really fell in love with it, and music that includes it. Not everyone likes her, but Rhonda Vincent is the person who made me fall in love with the mandolin. Any of her music is great, although it doesn't always feature just the mandolin. But Hunter Berry plays a mean fiddle, and it's some pretty good bluegrass, if you like bluegrass music. She's got several CDs out you could look into. Besides that, I second the Butch Baldassari and David Schnaufer CD Appalachian Mandolin and Dulcimer. It's really great, and I love listening to it too. A little different with the dulcimer being in it too.

John seems to be a like minded soul as this is exactly the 3 I thought of immediately. These 3 could provide you with insight and entertainment for a lifetime.
