How many mandolin players have a Hot Rod ?
How many mandolin players have a Hot Rod ?

I grew up in the 60's when bluegrass/mandolin and hot cars were considered outlaws. Both very exciting and great hobbies. I have a 1964 Pontiac GTO and play
1974 F-12 Gibson and F style by private make Ray Webber.

I usEd to have a 71' Chevelle I was restoring with my dad, but sadly had to leave it behind when I moved to NYC. I will be getting it back one day though.
I've got and old '64 Galaxie 500 in the shed. She's patiently waiting restoration although could be driveable with $100 and a good day's work. Not really a hot rod, but she's still pretty fast.

I've got an '82 Vanagon Camper....
Mick,
I reckon that qualifies. Sweet ride!
Reminds me of a Black Oak Arkansas tune , Because this is a family forum I'll leave it at that

Yeah, I've got a couple early Ford "old style" Rods. And a whole mess of fiddles too!
Will Kimble builds mandolins... AND HOT RODS!
It wasn't mine, but back in the late 70s my girlfriend and I drove her mom's Triumph TR6 from Albuquerque to Miami (her mom flew). That was one sweet ride - it liked to go fast, wouldn't break a sweat even at 120, with the tightest steering I've ever enjoyed. The drive through Texas was so long and boring for a little while I played while I drove with my knees. That was fun!
Most of my cars come to me near the end of their lives and I run them into the ground. I'm an automobile hospice. Fastest car I ever had was a Ford Fairmont wagon, the smallest one they made with a V-8. With that big engine in that light body it had no problem going 100, much to the surprise of the people driving the Corvettes and Porsches I passed.
Generally speaking, I think mandolinists and hot rods would be a bad mix. Too much tuning!

Yesterday drive,n to work listening to
I Flathead by Ry Cooder forgot that there was a rod show nearby. So it got me wondering how many guys have rods ? But JB when they are tuned don,t they sound soooo good? And Mick does it really go faster coz it,s red ? How about a sound clip..

Problem is, if you spend half the time tuning and the other half playing, thinking that you're out of tune, when do you have time to tune the rod, or, for that matter, drive it? As Ricky Nelson said, I'd rather drive a truck.

I'm all in... This is the '30 tudor sedan on a '32 frame that I built over the last year:
And I am open to trading mando stuff for old Ford stuff - I particularly like '30-31 Model As, V8 transmissions & '32-34 anything.

Nice '30 there Will!!! Here is a detail photo, shot in my 64 Chapron bodied Citroen Cabriolet........more a Classic than a hot rod.......but definitely HOT! Wish I still had that Radio Flyer A model.

Journeybear, you've got good taste in cars!
I grew up restoring Triumphs with my dad and currently own a 73 Triumph TR6. I've had it for 20+ years. Its a hotrod too..... approx 170 horses under the hood from the motor I built to race it in some SCCA stuff. Still road legal, and still fun!

Will, is that an orig 30s flathead? The car is sharp, but that flathead is impressive. Haven't seen one in a while. You have to know what you're about to put one of those back on the road.

Thanks, Chinn, but it was all luck. Which is not to say I didn't appreciate it, because I sure did. Never have owned anything like it, nor any other sports car, and hardly even any sedans, for that matter. My personal vehicle body style choices have been more along the same lines as my, well, personal vehicle body style: built for comfort, not for speed. Vans more than anything else, though I started with two Gremlins. Charming little thingies, they were ...

Some guys totalled out my '70 Super Bee tryin to do the Dukes of Hazard's over a railroad track. I made my '08 Charger into a clone. Have a six-banger in the garage with dual exaust and 2 single barrell carbs waiting to go in my son's '54 Chevy. Mandos: Fender, Godin and a Weber.
Superbee.......wow.........those unmolested numbers matching muscle cars have gotten valuable.
They were awesome to drive. Nuttin like pullin through the gears and hittin 145 to scare your passengers
Thanks guys.
Hey Mike, I think the engine is circa '45 and is somewhat unusual as it is a 221 ci (3 1/16" bore) instead of a 239 (3 3/16" bore). The block has a "59" designation and based on what I have read was built for dealers as a short block replacement for earlier engines. It came out of a '37 pickup, all of the ancillaries were wore out but the short block was pristine.
Hey Mick - nice deuce roadster!
