    Question Cigarbox Mandos on Elderly

    Hi folks,

    http://elderly.com/new_instruments/n...olin--CBM1.htm

I've been looking at a cigarbox instrument as a possible traveller for this summer (going to Turkey for a month-and-a-half), and wondered if anyone knew anything about these (who makes 'em, do they sound halfway decent, are they playable, etc.). Other idea is to get a cheap soprano uke and string it GDAE.

    Any thoughts?

I don't know anything about this particular maker, but cigar box instruments have quite a following, and can be very playable and a lot of fun. I built a 3 string cigar box guitar that sounded better than you'd expect. For what you are wanting it for, and for the price, I don't see how you could go wrong.

forget it - too silly ...

istanbul, if you go there, is a fabulous city. cross the bosphorus and walk up to the galata tower - you'll find an entire street filled with shops selling musical instruments - just fabulous.

Not sure I'll be in Istanbul while I'm out there (I'll be in the southern part of the country), but that does sound like a cool market. Part of me wants to get an oud or a Greek zouk while I'm there, but getting it back to the US would be expensive, painful, and distressing.
