My current "most played" CD is the recently released Three Mile Stone. I love Marla Fibish's mandolin. This is just one of many great Irish/Celtic CD choices.

Can't seem to get enough of Tim O'Brien lately as well.

    Hi henry2010,

You're sure to get a mountain of cd recommendations from the wise folks here! When I first got involved with Irish/Cape Breton/Shetland/Scottish tunes, one thing that helped me get the feel for how the tunes want to be played was to listen to old recordings. This music has such a long history and hearing tunes I learned via Planxty, Altan, etc. played by the likes of Michael Coleman, Paddy Canny or Joe Cooley really enhanced my appreciation of the tradition.

A few good sites for old recordings that you can download:

    http://ceolalainn.blogspot.com/
    http://www.tedmcgraw.com/recimages/fset2.html - Irish
    http://www.tedmcgraw.com/recimages/ScotsPage.html - Scottish
    http://www.raretunes.org/

For contemporary downloads, Randal Bays has a great tune learning page - http://www.randalbays.com/tunepage.html - the soundclips/video link has additional files.

http://www.nataliemacmaster.com/ - just clips but some are pretty generous.

http://comhaltas.ie/ and http://comhaltasarchive.ie/search has great info and downloadable files, both old and new.

    Enjoy your journey into Irish!

Second the Three Mile Stone thing, also the Cafe's mp3 section - Dan Beimborn's Sliabh Russel set is about one of the first I learned on my then new Fylde OM.

Jill's list will get you off to a good start! Mick Moloney's "Strings Attached" was/is an inspiration to me. Dan Beimborn has two excellent CDs out as well, "Shatter the Calm" and "Torch and Fire."

Ten years later, I'll add her solo album The Bright Hollow Fog, which she released last year. It's pretty bare bones, with little accompaniment, so you really can dial into her playing, which has such a gorgeous lilt to it. I've had the cd for a few months, and I'm still playing it a few times each week.

One could hardly go wrong listening to The Chieftans. On Pandora I’d also recommend the Liz Carroll Radio, Liz Carroll and John Doyle.
    CDs, Ye Vagabonds are great
